Both cards made by Apollo. Both almost the same price. The Radeon 9000 is a non-pro version with 64mb DDR, set at 250/400. The GF4MX440 is also 64mb DDR, set at 275/400. They don't mention the NS of the DDR, but it's probably the same on both.
Which would be better?

get the 9000 its a little bit slower than the radeon 8500 which is on par with a geforce 3 ti500 all in all the 9000 smokes the geforce 4 mx440 if i were you i would save and get an 8500 the naming conventions are kinda wierd but the 8500 is a really good card and can be had for around $120 or a 8500LE (the 8500's little brother still plenty fast tho) for around $100 both of these cards are faster than the 9000....

I ONLY have $60 to spend... So you're saying the 9000 is faster? It didn't make it onto TOMS VGA chart, which is what I use to judge what's really faster than what...

You won't find many people who are fond of Tom here.

Get the 9000 or 8500LE if its in your price range, or a GF3 Ti 200. A GF4 MX has no DirectX 8 features and is basically a Geforce 2.

Mx cards basicly is a Gf2 with "GF4" name

Like the others, get Radeon 8500/9000 or Gf3Ti200 (very cheap ~$60-70)

It all depends what you want from your card. If it's for die-hard gaming, stay away from the MX440. But for everyday use, and light gaming, it's an excellent card for the price.

I agree, an mx440 is good enough unless you want to play the latest games at high detail settings and high resolution and get a high frame rate.

A Radeon 8500LE is only $66 on pricewatch. Best bang for the buck imo.

You guys must be crazy to even say the MX440 is "OK". The GF4 MX is a DX7 based card, so gaming is pretty weak on them. The Radeon is totally the better choice here! The Radeon 9k supports full DX 8.1 and Pixel Shaders so games would look and run WAY better on this card. Go for the Radeon 9k!

its actually decently close, but i would get the 9000 for DX8 support

how can you tell quality? If this is even a real ATI or just Saphire?

What about the 9000... better or worse than the 8500le?

the first couple entries are saphires :(

What do people have against Tom's VGA chart, or Tom in general? Just curious, I've never heard of that before.

I've seen several reviews that put the 9000 just a tad above the 440. So that sounds good. Theoretically, if I get a real OEM ATI, it should be better at overclocking, and just better in general, right?

I can tell you not the R9K non-pro/pro is a fantastic card, the R8500/LE would be a silghtly better card if you could afford it, but if not you wont be dissapointed with the R9K :)

heres my score from when I had my R9Kpro :)

Played UT2K3 fine

I seem to see that the 900pro is pretty good, but it's also more expensive, might as well go 8500. How about just the 9000?

I don't have enough posts yet (working on it) but do these things ever come up in the for sale section of this board? I mean just B level cards in general such as Radeon8500/9000, GF3 series, etc. I imagine they would as all you folks seem to always buy the newest and best.

So will a 9000 go to 9000 pro speeds? I can get a 9000 64mb for just over 100 cdn and a 9000 pro 64mb for 190ish cdn.. Big difference. What ns of ram is on the built by ATI 9000?

All I can say is its better to save and get a better card in a few weeks than to get a crappy card now and drool over a better one later... Save up for a retail (made by ati) 8500LE you wont regret it plus they are stellar overclockers and they have a 3 year warantee... I have bought 4 vid cards this year because I wasnt willing to save it cost me $250 more than needed in upgrades cause I was impatient....

*edit*
Oh and if you do decide to save set you goal to no less than a 9000PRO made by either Gigabyte or ATI...
And check here (http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=144716) if you are confused about what card is better than the other...
also if you wanna play UT2003 or doom III when they come out get a 128mb card....

Yeah I'll probubly get the 128mb. I'll be getting a mostly new box for doom3, but I'll want to play the test at a decent res.

i would also choose the radeon 9000 instead of a gf4 mx becuz the gf4 is just an newer version of the geforce 2 mx. plus the radeon is faster :)

My R9Kpro only had 64Mb and ran UT2K3 no problems, my Ti4200 I have now only has 64Mb and I can play with everything maxed on my rig... so it's not a necesseety just yet, probably will be for Doom3 tho as you say :)

for a nice buyers guide, check out the guide created by the oc3dmark team at http://oc3dmark.octeams.com/cardguide.html

that should give you some performance idea and whether it's a good deal or not.
