View Full Version : Can i run a Tec with my 'current' PSU?
Hi,
Could someone please let me know if/and how powerful a TEC, I can run a from my current psu, the specs are as follows;
+5v = 35amps
+12v = 15amps
-5v = 0.5amps
-12v = 0.8amps
3.3v = 22amps
+5vSB = 3amps
Its a 400w psu.
Thanks

not a peltier over 80watts

TEC's run on the +12v line. Every Peltier cooler should have a chart that tells you how many amps it uses. Your PSU, 15amps on the +12v line, will run any peltier that consumes that much power or less, and this is only true if the PSU is completely dedicated to the TEC.
Could i not run a higher powered tec on a lower voltage line, like a 230w peltier from the 5v line, as i have 35amps on the +5v. Sorry if these are silly questions to be asking, but im just starting out!
Thanks for your pacient replies.

People are known to have converted 80mm fans and such from the +12 to the +5, but I'm not sure how this is done exactly. I think they went and got resistors from Radio Shack and did some mods inside the PSU... wish I could help more.

Yes you can run a 230 Watt TEC on the +5V supply but the cooling capacity will be substantially less than at 12V.
What do you want to cool? A 230 Watt TEC at 5V would provide a moderate amount of cooling for a GPU, but it's not likely to be much good for a CPU.
