Well, I fubared myself. I have an original Windows98SE upgrade copy, only thing is, the drive I am installing onto is blank, and the upgrade wants to "see" an older version of Windows. Only I do not have one. Win2k and WinXP are a no go :-) I gave away my legit copy of Windows 95 a looooong time ago. Thinking I would never need it again, but I made a "classic" little rig with 366mhz Celeron and a Voodoo1....and Win2k is just too much for it...besides I want to keep it faithful to the time period this machine was originall a hot number in...

What files must I show the setup program to prove I have/had an older version so that the upgrade will proceed?

Why dont you just go get an original copy of Windows 3.1 for like $3?

How bout WinME? (i know thats blasphemy, but what you gonna do?)
If not this, then the only other legal thing you can do (and I can suggest to you on this forum) is to go buy a used copy of Win95.

Well....of course I would not do anything illegal...but damn. Guess I will "look around" for something....thanks for the replies.

I believe the upgrade version looks for c:/windows/win.com to determine if an existing version of Windows has been previously installed. I also don't think the upgrade version cares what is in win.com but just that win.com exists. You might try to use the DOS "copy con" command to create a bogus text file and then try to install. I do not know if this will work but I do know the full version can be tricked into upgrading an existing version by deleting win.com. Hope this helps.
