I'm waiting until the GeForce FX comes out, and prices drop, to upgrade my video card. Until then, I would like to get the best out of games that I can.. mainly Sof2, GTA3. Im thinkin about OC'ing this..

Theres no cooling on the card, and I got 2 fans in my PSU, cpu, and 1 on HD. Getting a new Antec 1000AMG case soon, and will have good cooling then..

Could I still OC the card on my current setup?

What program would I use?

What's the max stable I could OC it at.
Thanks.

Every card is different and will OC differently. Just use 3dmark2k1 and see how high it will go without getting a lot of artifact and whatnot

Could I still OC the card on my current setup? It would help if we knew your current setup...a list of your components in a signature would definately help ;)What program would I use?RivaTuner is probably the most popular o/c'ing tool out there for nvidia, so start with it.What's the max stable I could OC it at.o/c it until you start to see a noticeable degradation of video...i.e, smears or snow on the screen, games and apps crashing to the desktop, things like that. You will know when you've gone too far, but you might not know when you reach the limit. Check our team database at the OC3DMark Team website at http://oc3dmark.octeams.com for cards like yours to compare to...and good luck!

by setup, I meant the under average cooling in my case..

I have 1.9Ghz, WinXP, 512RDRAM, 40GB HD, 400watt PSU, and all the other works. The video card is the GF2 MX 100/200 32MB

how do I check how far I can OC it by using 3dmark2k1?

the gf2 ima oc came w/ my gateway computer.. so im not sure wut manufacturer it is, or how much i could overclock it... wut would happen if I OC it too much? the default speeds on it are 175/167... I checked on RivaTuner.. how far WOULDNT I want to overclock it... past 200? Im thinking about 200/190'ish or something.. what could happen if I oc'd it too much. Hope you guys can give me some feedback on these questions, thanks a lot

if you OC it too high it could kill the card (you would have to really go overboard to kill it).

to find the cards overclocking limit you just raise the speed in 5Mhz increments, run 3DMark2001 between each speed adjustment and when you start to see the slightest errors (wrong color, the 'snow' effect.... you'll see what i'm talking about) then lower the speed by 5Mhz and you should be fine. i would get a cheap Chipset fan for the GPU though, it will really help cool the card and shouldn't cost more then $5 or $6.

I just overclocked my gf2 mx :D the default speeds were 175/167, now the speeds are 183/171... raised my 3dmark2001 from 1614 to 1669 (1027x768) high detail, v sync on... not bad i guess... should I overclock it even more?

Hi,

Put a fan on top of this card and you'll probably be able to raise core speed up to 205 or so. For the mem, there is absolutely no risk. Just increase it's speed until you see artifacts, then decrease 5 Mhz or so, and you're done.

Hehehehe check my sig for my GF2 MX's overclock :D

Thats in my cold computer room with just a little heatsink on it. No fans pointing at it or anything. I use rivatuner and get 3331 in 3dmark2001se.

As to risk, you really wont do anything bad to it without a voltage mod, seeing as GeForce2 GPUs freeze/reboot at 55C.

careful! someone killed a geforce ddr when they cost $300 by pushing the core from 120 to 150 and now in 3d it gets artifacts even when he clocks it back to 120, but its still fine in 2d. I was thinking of buying it and suggested he sell it as a high end 2d only card

With no cooling whatsoever on the card it might not be a bad idea to get ahold of an old i486 HSF (usually a 40mm piece, the same size as what would get mounted on that GPU), and install it on there. Get a fan with a three pin Molex and plug it into an available mobo fan header, or a four pin and straight to the PSU...either is fine as the draw on them certinly won't fry a mobo header.

I also wrote a short article on cooling the backside of the GPU on the Front page, which can be found here (http://www.overclockers.com/tips901/).

Note...this technique will only work if there's mounting holes around the GPU...if your card has none, it won't work.

there isnt a need to cool the core. dont overclock the core, it wont help, just get the ram as high as you can!!!!!!! trust me

Yeah the GF2s with SDR are all memory bandwidth limited. OCing the core can you get a couple FPS, but nothing compaired to mem. Max em both out with whatever you have atm :)

Yeah!! just oc'd it to 183/180... and my new 3dmark2001se score is.. 1742 :D

not worth playing with the core, but whatever makes you happy. I personally think your wasting your time, money and making unwanted heat OCing the core for 3% increase in fps when the memory will give you 10x that

i did if you notice on my last post.. i had 183.. and when i just oc'd it again, i left the core where it was, and put the memory up by like 10 mhz...

I think I found the memories limit.. I put it at 190 and during 3dmark2001 there were horizantal short lines bouncing around.. anyways.. its at about 188 memory, 184 core, might bring core up, and im at 1855 3d marks :D... a lot better than 16xx :)

leave your core at 175 or default speed. my ram could do 210 but I always leave it at 166
