Use rivatuner (my personal favorite) or powerstrip for overclocking. You can (fairly) safely overclock it until it crashes with stock cooling and no modifications. My procedure for overclocking vid cards is up both core and mem 10mhz at a time, then run 3dmark2001se (which you can get from madonion.com). If you get any visual artifacts or anything strange, back off a little and try again until you find your card's limits. Make sure you are compleatly stable at that speed, and enjoy faster gaming :)

If you up it 10mhz at a time, you should reach the limits pretty quickly. Personally, I use Coolbits which lets you test the new settings - I don't know if RivaTuner does this - but during the test it will momentarily apply the new settings to see if they're stable. During these few seconds watch the screen... there'll usually be artifacts at this point if it's not stable.
