Hi,

I am currently testing out a vapochill with a P4 2.8, & a WD 120 Gig 8meg cache drive.

I will say that this drive is loud, way louder than any fans in the case (not many now) so loud that I think it is going back.

It is way louder than my maxtor 80gig drive & much louder than my maxtor 8 gig drive (oldie for testing).

Anyway, I was curious, should the drive be louder than a fan? Is there something wrong with it or what?

Thanks,
Rich

well when you think about it, it spins at 7200RPM and your oldie probably spins at 4500 RPM and your case fans dont spin nearly that fast. If I were you I would get ear plugs..

I have the WD800JB, the 80gig version, and it is whisper quite. It is way quieter than the older 7200rpm 20gig drive. I can barley hear it when i have my ear to it. Maybe it has to do with the 120GB instead of 80GB.

I have the WD1200JB, the same as you. Mine is whisper quiet. I cannot hear it at all over my case fans, even when I'm defragging the drive and the fans are on low speed.

I had bought a WD 40GB that was very loud, like you are saying. It ran slow in benchmarks and I didn't trust it. Exchanged it at the store I got it from, and the new one is silent, and runs better. I've also seen drives in the shop at work that were very loud and had died. Could be a sign of a problem.
