I've heard ppl using razor blades to apply/spread AS3. I also heard that I should spread to a thickness of 1 sheet of regular a4 paper......?
How do you guys apply as3 and know that it's done right? I heard this compound can shorten if used wrong.
And on P4 CPU's there's a hole at the corner. I should not let as3 get inside that hole, correct?
Help out a noob please~!!

i asked a similar question about the hole in the p4 chip... i got no answer.... someone with the knowledge please tell!
yes the AS3 should be pretty thin. I think a translucent layer is good (when you can barely see through it) I used a razor blade on my chip and it works great.

Yep, don't need much as3.
Do use a PAL type razor blade, construction type, with the heavy back. You know you got the as3 about right when you can scrape a thin layer over the cpu, just enuff to cover the color of the metal. That doesn't mean that there won't be a tad thicker spot of as3 somewhere on the cpu when u get done. There may very well be a tiny ridge of it on the cpu, from the corner of the razor. Just smear it as even as possible, covering the whole top. As for the hole, don't put no as3 close to the hole, say within 3/16", or about the width of the hole. You can work the as3 over to it, and as the as3 thins out, you can go right over the hole, or work it around it. BTW, it won't hurt if the as3 goes in the hole a little. What is bad is if you get a whole lot in there and or it runs everywhere after it gets in the hole.
Hope this helps,
Mike

covering the hole in the IHS will cause no damage at all.
the hole no longer serves a purpose. it is a leftover from when the chip was being put together at the factory.
when the IHS is attached, the hole allows the air trapped inside to escape, so no damage is caused.

I should let you know that there's absolutely no problem if the AS3 covers the hole. After a few minutes, it's actually absorbed *into* the hole... At least that's what happened to my CPU when I applied AS3 (8 months ago) and I hadn't been facing any problems whatsoever with the chip...
