View Full Version : 93C but heatsink is cold?

In the bios it said that my processor was 93C 180F.
i let it run for about 20 min at that temp and then felt the heatsink but it was cool.
could this just be a problem with the boards temputure readings?

If there anyway i can fix it or find out what my temps really are?

Theboard is
Asus P3V4X /w P3 600
i changed the HS/F and have some radio shack heatsink compoiund.

also:
The heatsink is touching the cpu
and the cpu is cool as well

sounds like your temp. probe is busted, no way your processor would run @ 90+ dgr C.

Hmm, weird.. if it was 93c, it wouldn't run for 20 mins :)

Did the temp variate @ all? If not, the BIOS could be bullcrapping to you.. as the temp is likely to vary a few c here and there.. if it's rock solid jammed on 93 then it aint reading properly.

If it *is* @ 93c, take your heatsink off, apply some fresh thermal paste and remount it... If the HSF aint getting hot but the CPU is, then it shows theres air gaps of some significant size which aren't allowing good heat transfer @ all!!

OMG you were 2ºC from wasting that processor pal. If I saw my temps get that high I would rip the power cable from the pc faster than Neo moves. I definately would not let it run for 20mins.

Your contact between the hsf and the cpu is messed up. Im certain that ensuring the hsf is properly on and you are using thermal compound that your temps will fall by half of what they are.

Another thing, you sure you wasnt reading it as fareinheit? That would make sense then!

Man, that thermistor must be smoking crack. :-D

That is a P3. It has an internal thermal diode.

No way it can run at 93C either. So just reinsert the CPU in the board and remount the heatsink with a generous amount of thermal compound.

If its a P3 with a slocket, the slocket could be giving the wrong readings too. The only slocket i ever had that had thermal reading support was an Asus one.

If you are running a pelt, then you may installed the wrong way around. Either that, or your HSF is seriously mis-mounted. THE HSF MUST FEEL HOT TO THE TOUCH! Cool HSF = no heat transferred to the air from HSF. Which path does the heat take then??

Does it boot through Window? Have you run any programs without crashing? Maybe your temp diode's crapped out, man.

Ya must be smoking somthing how could i touch a 90+C cpu and it be cold?

My computer is stable
i can run soft burn in for 15 hours no probs

ive only crashed a few times and that was because the pci bus was to high

right now its not overclocked

I think what you should do is invest in some kind of thermal probe. I'm almost sure that your bios reading are goofy. No cpu could run that hot and survive to tell the tale. Here's a link to crazyPC's thermal probes. I have one of these and it works great. Keep in mind that there are other places to look i'm just giving crazyPC's link because there with overclockers.com

The Single one

Or the Dual (better deal)

15hrs on a CPU burner? Either your CPU is a soldier or you really need to get a new thermistor.

Can you try removing the HSF immediately after 30 mins on full load and try to touch the CPU core and HSF base? I'll give some clue to whether the contact is OK or not. See if the paste is discoloured.

Remember that 93'C is CPU core temp and not HSF temp.

I have and abit bx6 rev 2 using an msi slotket and I get super high readings too. Its the slotket dont wory about it. Bios says im runing at like 120c but my thermister says 35 LoL

*Whew* relief. Guess nothing serious here.
