maybe this could be a poll?

im only at 20GB right now, but im wondering what kind of space ill need in the near future (compared to others responses), so this info is kinda important.

i was thinking...

0-20GB
20-40Gb
40-80Gb
80-120Gb
120Gb+

Right now I'm at 60GB out of 80GB on my main PC, and 13 out of 20 on my lappy.

It depends on what you are going to use the drive for. I do alot of mp3 stuff, video recording / editing, and gaming. Plus I dont like to back stuff up very often or uninstall things I'm not using at the moment.

For me, when I made the an upgrade (from 30) I didnt look at anything under 80 gigs.

see, thats the thing... i do a little of everything. and when the sata drives get here, i want to be sure to have the space i need, i want to be able to not have to clean out my drives and reformat as much.

i guess part of my question should be: what do you use your HDD for, and how fast foes it fill up

AAARRGH! i wish this was alot easier to explain, just that i need more space, and i dont know how much space i need in the long run.

so i guess part of my question would be: how long have you had your HDD?

but the original POLL would work very well to satisfy my curiosity, seeming as you can tell a little about what a person uses their HDD for just by being in the forums for awhile.

ill shut up now

On my old system, 12 GB out of 12 GB used after four years of downloading stuff.
On my new system, 13 GB out of 120 GB used after about six months.
On my really old system, 320 MB out of 250 MB after about four years.
On my Mac, 240 MB out of 250 MB after about three years

I've found that, regardless of the size of the hard drive, I end up filling it after about four years.

I basically use my PC for programming and games. I also do web browsing and email, but who doesn't? I also store all my music on my PC, and just about every file I download gets saved on drive E (freeware, shareware, etc). I'm totally against software piracy, so there is no large cache of software and games.

I have an 80GB and 40GB hard drive, and I'm using up almost 72 GB. A good amount of it is probably just wasted space taken up by things I never bothered deleting because I didn't need to.

You must have a bios limitation then. A drive rated at 40GB is actually 36-38GB in size, and there is no loss from partitioning and formatting. The drive manufacturers use to use this excuse for over-rating their drives, but now admit that the simply call a 1,000,000,000 bytes a gig. In reality a GB is 1073MB, not 1000. 40 divided by 1.073 is 37.2, not 33. The type of partition and formating affects storage efficiency, not the realized size. Drives are all rated in terms of formatted capacity, it's just that they have modified the definition of GB to overstate the capacity of the drives. The degree of difference between the rating and the actual capacity is less than you are experiencing, meaning the bios is not allowing access to the entire drive.

Under

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer

Create a new DWord "NoLowDiskSpaceChecks", and change the value to "1"

That's what works under Windows XP, however.
