Alright, right now I have two rigs. Well, my main one, and this crap gateway that is sitting next to me. I want to upgrade this machine, so heres what I plan on doing:
mobo:sell
CPU:sell
RAM:sell
PSU:give away
HD:keep
CD:keep

This is what I would do if I go AMD:
I have a spare 1800+, so I wouldnt need to get a cpu.
mobo: 35 bucks (refurb off newegg)
RAM: 100 bucks (want some OK ram)
cooler: some cheap cooler (dont plan on overclocking this that much, even though I want to)

With all the stuff I can sell off this machine, it works out to about 60 bucks in parts for the gateway, and I would have to spend about 170, so I would have to spend about 120 with shipping and all.

Now I have been thinking about doing a dual system. So heres the route I would do:
mobo:sell
RAM:keep
CPU:sell
PSU:give away
HD:keep
CD:keep
1800+:sell

I would want to get some dual P3's. Namely becuase I like the cheap mobos and they are pretty good from what I have read. It kinda works out like this:
mobo:40
RAM:free
cooler: cheap
CPU:76 (refurb 1.13 on newegg :D )
So it works out to be around 60 for the parts on the gateway, and about 45 for my 1800+. That brings me to 105, and then the stuff for the dual would cost me about 120 with shipping and all. I would only get one cpu for this now, and get another one later on... I can probably overclock these things to about 1.3.

***Sorry about this rambling on post, Im just trying to figure out which one to get***

Now, with that over and done with, they would cost the same. But, I would be able to overclock the p3 to just about 200 mhz lower than the 1800+ (trust me, mine cantoverclock for crap)
Then later on I would add the other one on... Which system should I go for? Would the duals be faster than the one 1800+? I really want an overall system performance. This box would probably be a server in the near future/gamer/surfing and some other basic stuff. I guess I would need to get the dual if I wanted to do this... Are the dual's THAT fast? What would you guys get? Oh, and Im on a tight budget. Thanks. Oh, and lets not turn this into intel amd war.

unless your using a lot of multithreaded apps then i would go with a single faster CPU. regardless of when brand it is (AMD/Intel).

Unless your running apps the make use of SMP or running lots of CPU intensive apps, the single CPU system might prove to be faster at most things.

the guys are right here, a single cpu system will be faster in pretty much everything.
You also cant use those p3's in a dual config, u need the 1.26ghz 512k cache server version for dual p3 action.
From what ive found a cheap dual XP and mobo combo works out just as cheap with better performance and upgrade path.
