What are the best alternate windows GUI options?

I've heard of windowblinds for ~$30.

Any good free ones too?

I'm thinking of adding a little art to my w2k desktop without using a system resource hog.

I still only have a PPro200 computer, not a 2+GHz dragster.

TIA,

I've heard good things about AstonShell. That's a kernel replacement like LiteStep, however.

SMP duallies though, so it's the equivelant of almost 400MHz under an NT OS. Maybe even higher under Linux. In any event, I expect a performance improvement much better than I've been getting even under 98lite.

Right now I'm using the 95 explorer GUI and it's fairly speedy compared to the fully webbified standard 98 GUI.

This is a great surfing rig and doing MP3s, etc. It won't ever be a highend gaming rig or play high res/fps video. Someday in its second life, it'll be a linux gateway server.

I got (IMO) the best Windows GUI replacement. KDE 3.1;)

Oh - you'll also need Linux to run it........

Litestep was the best Windows one I ever came across though.

*edit* Happy Birthday Audioaficianado btw:)

I had to register with LiteStep to get access to their site. Nice themes though. Too bad you get logged off everytime you move around on their site. Maybe they've fixed that by now.

Anyone know if LiteStep is compatible with SMP systems, since you're replacing the kernel and all?

No way Litestep is going to replace the NTOS kernel. It will replace the explorer GUI shell and file manager at most.

Ahhh.....

thanks for clarifying. I was kind of confused about that.:) I was wondering why they'd have to go through the trouble of replacing the kernel, etc.

I couldn't agree more. If explorer was half as usefull/configurable as KDE 3.1 the word would be a better place.

I already have that one when I run Linux ;)

Now if someone will just port KDE3.1 to windows, all will be well with the world.

i've been using a combo of stylexp, y'zdock and y'ztool (http://yz.designtechnika.com/software/yzdock/index_en.html) to change my icons and what not. All the yz's progs are freeware. :)

"OS: Windows XP Professional or Home Edition
Caution: This software does not work in Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000." Too bad because I have w2k and that's where I'll stay.

Thanx,
