Well... you can see the system in my SIG.. and I'm thinking about getting an LCD/TFT monitor... fyi, my MSI G4 has a DVI...
Basically, I hardly play 3D games.... although I do have NBA Live 2003 and UT2003 in my collection... will a TFT do okayish with these games?
I mainly surf and play 2D games like HOMM4, manager games, Rollrcoaster Tycoon, and that sorta stuff...
I've been looking at the Samsung 171B/P, Phillips 170B2Y or Sony SDM-S81B... but I can't seem to find any data on their respective response times.
Any comments / Ideas?¨
Thanks, Flixotide

Go here & compare all specs of the various LCDs:
http://www.monitorsdirect.com/
The most important consideration for an LCD gamer is:
Response Time
A secondary factor is to choose an LCD that has the NATIVE max resolution you like best in general, as lowered interpolated resolutions degrade screen quality.
The newest 17 inch LCDs, Hitachi 174B & Planar PX-171M have the fastest RTs yet: 16ms total (Rise 12ms + Fall 4ms).
Many 17 inch LCDs & some 19 or 20 inchers have RT of 25ms, i.e., (Rise 15 + Fall 10ms). Don't consider any LCD with RT more than 25ms!
The Samsung 191T (19'') & Dell 200FP (20''), both with RT 25ms, are said to be excellent larger (gaming) LCDs available. The new Hitachi 174B (17'') is getting very positive reviews & "ghosting" seems to be markedly reduced or eliminated, on a practical basis.

I have a Hitachi CML174B and it is well worth the money. I play SOF2, UT2K3 and Nightfire without any ghosting whatsoever. My sister also has one now and she has only positive things to say about it.

The brand new Hitachi is 12 ms:)
I am still waiting on mine but its a Cornea Mp704 with newly revised specs of 500:1 Contrast 270 Bright nits and 20 Ms respsonse time shipped with a 50$ rebate making it only 388$ for a 17", by far the cheapest with best specs to dollar ratio.
I will let people know how well it preforms this week after I get it.

any of those will probably work for what you are doing, but I would go with the Samsung. I have a 170s 17" Samsung LCD and I notice no ghosting in games like UT2003 and SOFII, and they are very sharp and clear. Mine doesn't have DVI though, but all of the current Samsung 17inchers use the same panel, so you will get the same image quality, or a little better with DVI.

Bantre,
The newly revised Cornea MP-704 is listed with a Response Time total 20ms, but it's unclear if that's the Total RT or just the Rise time.
If this new Cornea MP-704 is, e.g., Rise 13ms & Fall 7ms, as Cornea tech Support told me, then this would be one hell of a great deal! If you find out specifically about the RT on this model, please comment back or message me. I'm very interested to know how this one performs.
The new Hitachi 174B, as mentioned before, has total RT 16ms, i.e., Rise 12ms + Fall 4ms.
Since there are no real Standards regarding the RT spec, it would be nice if manufacturers gave us the same The Response Times as Total RT, & include the specific Rise & Fall times. There is certainly "game playing" (no pun intended) with the RT specs by some companies.

Thanks for all of your tips guys... I'll be looking into the Hitachi one, as planar and cornea aren't availble in Denmark.
Cheers and merry xmas to ya all

I'm eager to see as well, should be here Weds/thurs at latest.
If it does well I will get a 2nd one for this computer I am on now.
My thinking is back when Max PC reviewed alot of monitors in April most of them had 40-70ms Response, 200-300 Contrast and low Nits( which alot of people that build these systems are telling me Contrast and Nit's attribute to some of the ghosting as much as the response time). Some of them back then cost $900 and preformed fairly decent on the closer to 40 ms.
After contacting ViewSonic the other day they informed me the fastest they had was 30ms of any model, they said these did very well but had a slight hang in DVD somewhat but it was alot better then the earlier revisions of these models.
So basically while alot of the LCD's have the same model # as they did 6 months ago, they have been revised multiple times to be faster, clearer, and brighter.
I am thinking anything above 400:1 25ms 250 will be fairly decent, well worth the saved space and eye strain, even for gamers.
When you get into 500:1 20 ms 270+ like this one , it :should: preform very well, we shall see soon:)

I have a samsung 151 and it is excellent (couldnt afford a 17").
I play UT2K3 and Counterstrike online and havent noticed any gosting, it runs at 75hz at 1024x768 res and in my opinion tft is the way to go, it connects via standard svga connector aswell (would have preferred DVI but doubt it would make a massive difference anyway)
shop around and get the best price/specced one you can afford and you can't go wrong :)
do a google search as there are loads of reviews out there on lcd screens, enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Devil duck, you raised a good question on the rise/fall.
While this review didn't have the newly revised specs of 20ms for the mp704 it had the one that was current till last month at 25ms of 15 rise 10 fall.

Not sure where it got quicker if in the rise or fall but its at least 15/10 and better by 5.
