View Full Version : Best Options for Aircooling
I am currently looking for the best aircooling options my friend can buy for my cpu and gpu. If you have any suggestions, feel free to post them. If your going to suggest a cpu cooler such as a mxc462+, he doesnt have mounting holes, so he has to use clips. He has already seeked out a cooling option for his gpu, it is http://www.zalman.co.kr/english/product/zm80a-hp.htm ...
The SLK 800 or the Alpha 8045 would be a couple to take a look at. Check out the heat sink shoot out on the front page.
hows this look?? I hear its great, and better than the mcx462+, its the HHC-001 HeatPipe cooler with a vantec Tornado at http://www.ocsystem.com/coolmashhhea1.html
Thats pretty far down on the list with a C/W of 0.34 There are better coolers that use the socket lugs like the SLK 800 with a C/W of 0.23 or the SK7 with a C/W of 0.25 that don't cost much more money.

Have to break from the crowd and say that the sk-7 or sk6+ is darn close and a lot cheaper.
Also note that a tornado fan is extremely loud.
For AMD? SLK-800 is the best.
For P-4, the AX-478 is the best.
SLK-800 with no second thoughts.

I have the zalman ZM80-HP on my Ti4200 and it works great.
It even got better o/c with stock cooling i got my gpu to 305Mhz,
and with the zm80-hp i got my gpu to 328Mhz.
Now i'm just waitin for the release of zalman cnps7000 cpu cooler,
It's available here in sweden in january.

That zalman gpu cooler... Doesn't that weight a lot? Putting a lot of stress on the card? I saw that it said be careful when moving and such. But, doesn't it seem a bit dangerous to have almost 400g on your fragile vid card? Does the HS get stay pretty cool, like to the touch.

SLK-800 / Thermalright AX7 - either of those with a 53cfm Metatronics fan is sweetness bc its only 39db

what about the TT Volcano 9 i tend to go towards the 3 clip design as it much safer to have 3 clips instead of one and you have less of a chance to break zif sockets this way from all the weight

if your not into spending lodsa cash on huge copper coolers for max overclock potental try the thermeltake volcano 9 or 7+
both are good make sure you use a 3 lug type clip with the 7+ as its copper and heavy
the 9 uses a gr8 fan by the way

The SK-6+, SK-7, and SLK-800 will all seriously outperform the Volcano line.
And, the SK-6+ and SK-7 arn't too pricey.
(SK-6+, SK-7, & SLK-800 all use all socket lugs for mounting--no worries there)

I just posted the fowllowing in another thread, i hope it will help:
I have heard that it is possible to fit a 92mm fan to the SLK-800... If that is true, you could get a Delta 100cfm fan. Two advantages: 1) obvisouly, more cfm on the heat sink. 2) Since the fan overhangs, it would also provide cooling for the Ram and northbridge.
Now the second advantage, may be less important, espically if you have active northbridge cooling. However, on my Epox 8k3ae, there is only a heatsink.
And about fitting the 92mm fan... i will be able to tell you guys for sure in the near future.... I am going home from school on thursday.... there is a nice package sitting on my desk :) :) I'll post in General Cooling as soon as i know weither it fits or not.
Edit: Remember, the tt smart fan only does 75 cfm max. it is 48 Db. the Delta does 100cfm at 52.5 Dba. But remeber, any 92mm is going to push more cfm.

Since those fans come from different companies, are the db's going to be compatiable? I read a few times that with the tornado fan they have it rated pretty low, but they also test 3 feet away from the fan, when it was 8" from the fan it was 72 or so db. That is quite a big difference. I know there is a lot more cfm, and since it is a bigger fan, would that be a lower pitched noise? or is it not really going to be noticable since it isn't much difference between 80mm and 92mm?

If youre going to move it around a lot, or if you're not using a high CFM fan, I'd go for the Alpha 8045. The 4 hole mounting system is far more secure IMO.
Alpha PAL153U all the way for GPU cooling :D
Thank you for all your suggestions. It seems i went against all that you guys said and got a HHC-001 with a delta on it. Right now my temps on my 2700+ are staying around 38C idle and 43C load so pretty good as far as temps go. I have that delta hooked up to a rehobus because it was a bit loud at first. i couldnt get the sk-7 or 8 because the way my socket is positioned the fan would slide right off the heatsink. I am using Fozzy Logic 4 to monitor my temps so they are farely accurate.
