How many dremel bits are needed for a case mod? I'm going to be doing a dragon or something of the sort and using the fiberglass reinforced cut off wheel. Also if I wanted to do a silhouette would i just not cut the design off all the way?

From what I have seen/read, about a dozen fiberglass reinforced wheels should be good,

thanks sometime this week I'm going to go get a 12 pack of them and I read that a Tungsten Carbide Cutter is best for detail, should I buy one?

Sure, just make sure your use it ONLY for what it's made for (as you should with all the other bits). Using the wrong tool for the wrong jobs is the best way to get yourself injured (or the best way to ruin your bits).

Makes sure to pick up filter masks and a pair of safety goggles/glasses.

I used about ten before I wisened up and realized I was using the wrong size. I was burning through em pretty fast so I bought some heavier dutier ones and I'm still on the first one I bought. The tungsten steel is good, but I'd suggest getting a rough area cut out and then using that tungsten steel bit. Good luck. I did a simple square with rounded edges for my window, and I'll probably expand after I turn in a few more folding units, good luck.

Doc what size of reinforced bits did you use?

pair of safety goggles/glasses.

DEFINATELY use safety glasses with a dremel.

I got a speck of metal in my eye once...it didn't really hurt at all, until it started rusting in there, and I had to get my doctor to scrape it out.

Always wear safety gear. I was wearing my winter gloves, but that was because it was cold in the garage...lol.

For the air filter, make sure its rated for fiberglass. The el-cheapo ones are only "comfort masks." They usually come in a 5 pack.....for the same price, you get a 2 pack of fiberglass rated masks. That should be sufficient for almost anything less than hazardous fumes....and you wont run into those when modding a case.

The bits....it depends on what size your window is, and the complexity of the design. My case had a LOT of cutting, and I used about 9 fiberglass reinforced cut-off wheels. I probably could have got by with 6 or 7, but it was my first time using a dremel, heh.

Anyway, just so you know, I have very little remaining on the side of my case for steel...I did a LOT of cutting. You might easily be able to use 5 and have some to spare.

Good luck!

Haha are you serious? I don't mean to laugh in a cruel way, but if that's true.... I don't know what to say. :D

I would suggest fiberglass reinforced cut off wheels for general cutting.

If you want to get into trickier designs, I would suggest a few carbide bits, as well as a small set of diamond bits.

at another site sysopt.com some ppl there say to get that and a multi purpose cutting kit the most control.

should I do a dragon or try to find something more original?

Yes, I am dead serious. Happened just a few months ago.

We bought a new house, with a nice built-in entertainment center. I was modding the entertainment center to accomodate our new 42 inch HDTV. I had to remove a shelf, and I was using my dremel to grind down the leftover nails.

The doctor scraped the surface of my eyeball to get the metal filing and the rust out. I had to take antibiotic eye drops for 10 days. Luckily, I only had to endure discomfort for a few days, and my vision wasn't affected.

And it's ok...you can laugh. I'm laughing about it now. It was my own stupidity that got me in that situation.

Ouch, sorry about that.

How long were the metal files in your eye before they began to rust?

Reminds me of a poster that was in my old shop class with a giant close up of an eye with a metal sliver sticking into it, with a big "WEAR YOUR SAFETY GLASSES" message underneath it. That poster always sent a shiver down my spine.

Hahaha, if it takes several discs to do a few holes it's a clear indicator that the wrong tool is being used. :p
I used a dremel to cut my case into Swiss cheese. I used a HSS drill/mill bit with 6 groves, not the cheapest stuff, but it works really good, and you need is one. Be sure to get a good quality one, made from tungsten, or HSS(high speed steel?) will probably do it aswell. I have an alu case and I cut a 92mm blowhole in less than 5 minutes. Just like drawing a circle really really slow...
What else? Well, tungsten is harder but more brittle and more care needed when using this, HSS is cheaper, won't last as long as tungsten, but surely long enough to mod a few cases. Just be sure when using any of them, keep the bits HEAT to a minimun. Stop once a while and check how hot it is. Check often in the beginning to asses how fast it heats up. Stop to let it cool, or cool it in water(turn dremel off before dipping it!!)
For good longelivity, always keep the bit below 200 C or it will deterioate fast.
Happy modding!! :)

well...I don't know exactly when it started rusting. It started hurting, and my eye started watering about 36 hours or so after the incident. It didn't hurt at all until then.

As you said in your post, you have an Al case. I'm sure a lot of people here have steel cases....and trust me, steel is a LOT harder than Al. Took me a good 8 fiberglass cut-off wheels to cut out my case.....there isn't a whole lot left now, but my design has a lot of cutting on it....could have done it with 6, but I didn't know what I was doing, lol.

Anyway, the same design on an Al case would have taken maybe 4 or 5 wheels, if even......so you're lucky with that Al case of yers.
