View Full Version : DLL errors when loading 98SE
As the topic says, I have a new system and everytime I try and load 98SE it will give .DLL errors during the "Updating System Settings". Any reason why this might be occurring, and what can I do to fix it?
It gives me this error with about 5 different DLL's so I'd rather not have to write down the names of each and reinstall them.
Did you install the OS on an overclocked machine? If so, try installing it again on failsafe settings (CPU on a 100 Mhz bus, RAM at CL3) and see if it'll go w/o errors.
What about your Win98 CD? Is it in good condition?
The CD is all good, that I do know for certain.
As for BIOS settings, the only option I have are 2 or 2.5, so I went back to 2.5. I hadn't overclocked the system as it is brand new from the box. After loading what they call the "optimized defualts" I still got a few of the same errors, although not as many.

see my post last page in windows tweaks.or go to help type in system file checker and click run system file checker.it will ask for the cd to replace corrupt versions.on a new system this should be done by checking all changed .dll's.compare file size and dates,if a newer one is smaller size replace it.check out the link in that post for 98 for full guide.
hope it cures it.
I got about halfway through the system file checker and keep getting a VXD VCACHE fatal error(dreaded blue screen). I also checked the BIOS on my K7T266 Pro mobo and it is rev1.0 Could it be possible that a newer BIOS would take these errors away? I looked on MSI and found 7 or 8 newer BIOS versions, but am hesitant to flash the BIOS.

it very well could.original bios's suck, especially rev 1.0 ones.that is why new ones come out to solve unexpected problems.i would go with the latest version.just be sure to read the manual and check the online guides for flashing and check for faq's for known issues.
also it seems like the vxd errors are linked to agp.is your video card supported by this mobo?are you using a gf4? if so there may be an updated bios with the fix for it.
Well I ran memtest86 and got hundreds of thousands of errors, so I switched out DDR sticks(had to go buy a new one). Everything is running stable now without a single glitch, and memtest86 reported 0 errors!
Guess all that dll and vxd stuff was just a side affect of bad RAM.
