View Full Version : if you had $100, what would you get?

if you had around $90-100 to spend, which graphics card would you get with the best potential (won't be outdated as fast, overclockability, speed, etc..)?

I was thinking about these:

Sapphire Radeon 8500LE 128mb (250/?)
Visiontek Geforce 3 Ti500 64mb (240/250)

they are both the same price.. almost. The Sapphire I heard from the customer reviews at newegg that the mem is clocked at 200, so it's not actually 250, but I dunno. They both seem to perform the same.. I would really want the 8500LE built by ATI but it seems to cost much more. If anyone has any input in this, please do say.
thanks :D

The 8500 kicks the **** outta the GF3, hehe. It can compete with the Ti4200 easy, where the Ti500 comes nowhere close

neither, the Saphire 128mb seems to be clokced at 200mhz so that would SUCK....

get the 64mb 8500 Saphire that is 275/275 at newegg

edit:
and the Geforce 3 actually is pretty close, optimized drivers make it perform very well compared to the 8500, but not well enough:D

Geforce4 ti4200 64mb

easily found if you follow ads close enough or read the different bargain forums a lot. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post links to the bargain forums.

If it was a choice between the two, I'd pick the ti-500. Only because the instruction set is a little bit better, and the image looks better for games (IMO). If it was for any graphics programs (photoshop, 3DS, Maya, etc...), I'd pick the 8500. It all depends on what you are going to be using the card for.

dont people say that the 128mb 8500LE's RAM isn't clocked as high, but can be flashed to retail and then overclocked further?

hm.... this doesn't apply to 3rd party sellers does it..

My Radeon 8500LE (built by ATi) is clocked at 300/300 right now, flashed to the regular 8500 BIOS and going strong

Funny, ten and a half months ago the Ti500 was spankin the 8500,:D:D

For less than 100 bucks, Definetely an 8500LE, specially if its a Gigabyte 8500LE, :)

I know what you mean, I just bought the TI200 Retail one from the pricewatch referal and held my breath. I called it in and made sure I got the right price and it all worked out.

Just sent the completed system to my bro-in-law. I knew I was taking the chance but it worked out good. TI200 for less then $70.00 is not bad in my book. Even came with some games and utilities.

Those are just examples to prove that it is possible to get them for 100. Another deal just expired 3 days ago at CompUSA. Last time I checked, a videocard upgrade wasn't a life threatening problem so he can probably wait a couple days for a deal. Anyways, he asked for an opinion and mine is to buy a ti4200 retail. Some people think he should get an 8500 refurb and that is just as valid of a suggestion.

Both are good cards, both are $100, and he can't buy either of them right now because there are no current ti4200 deals and the 8500's are out of stock. Does that mean all the posts on here are useless just because he can't buy them? I think not.
