View Full Version : Seti Give Away
Well this seems to get dropped every time I bring it up, so I decided to jump start it a little. I've almost got a complete mini cube pc ready to donate, but I'm wondering if we should hold off until the new project starts rather than try to boost membership here at the end of phase 1. Any thoughts? Oh and the parts are a shuttle ss40g, ram, and duron. We need a cdrom, floppy, and hard drive to finish it.
I think I've asked before. What's involved with the giveaway? i.e. What is the purpose (other than uber generosity) and how does one get one? :)

From my understanding, our team sets a certain number of WU you have to submit a day (Last contest it was 1 so everyone was eligeable to win), and you get tickets and such (I only remember that vaguely) and at the end we draw out a name that wins.
This will also draw attention to other people so we can get other people crunching for us. We can setup a thread and submit the link to the frontpage etc.
If money wasn't so tight I wouldn't have a problem with donating a cd-rw or a hard drive towards it, however, I could purchase/ship a floppy to ya..
*edit*
YGPM;)
You are right Tim about this getting pushed back here towards the end of Phase 1. I think we might want to use this as the opening contest for Phase 2.
Things should loosen up for me in January on the money front so it should not be hard to finsih that lil guy up at that time.
What does everyone else think?

The schedule has been updated in the SETI@home future page, and they are pushing the Southern Hemisphere project (Seti@home II) up to the start of the 2004. I would say that lets give it a green light to the raffle and do it now, so we can boost our production to get those frogz and be firmly inside the top 20 of the world rank......
Well those are my 2 cents anyway :santa:

Another angle is that this system may no longer be a uber-cool neat thing by the start of project 2. Also, a wu raffle may boost production and allow us to finish in the top 20 by the end of the project. Plus, I would win it, and that would be cool. ;)
Beginning of '04 now eh? Only 1 thing, 3 words to say to that, project green light! :)
Alright, I'll see what else I can dig up.
TC - What size hard drive we talking?? A small one i.e. 6 gig or larger? I will donate the cd rom or the hard drive depending on the size you are looking for.
Let me know
Beginning of '04 for Phase II? Hmmm...that gives me more time to move up the ranks :).

Acording to the updated (December the 2nd)SETI Future page (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/setifuture.html) Arecibo will be shutdown in January of the 2003, the data server will run until March '03. SETI backend science (?) will run until Jun '03.
Astropulse will be beta from March until sometime between Jun and Octiober, going gold in January '04.
S@H II (aka Souther Hemisphere) will go green, first the receiver in January '04 and the public version of the client sometime after that one. I expect sometime in the second quarter of the 2004.

Now sounds good:)
Things are tight around here, but I do have a pile of decent hardware :D, so if there is anything you are lacking for the prize I may have or be able to get it.......:)
Okay looks like we have almost everything needed except for a hard drive. I was going to donate a 1.2gig duron, but the Athlon might sound better. Now we need to come up with the rules. I suggest we do it similar to last time, which is also about the way the folding team did it.

oh man id love to win this one, considering the case and mobo go for almost $1000 alone here i will never get the chance to own one personally.
Lets get this show on the road ;)
I thought the format was ok last time too
I'm sure if you win we can scrape up the funds to ship it your way - as long as import tax doesn't spoil the party ;)

Ok TC !!
Where do you want the harddrive delivered.
I have a brand new maxtor 30Gb that i can
be without.
Just give med the delivery adress.
The Wizard
If we send it outside the US as a gift with no commercial value we dont have to worry about taxes, duties etc... Would just cost a bit more to ship.
Sounds like we've got all the parts together now

Wait a sec - who all is donating what? Can we put a list down here? I don't want to end up with more than one of each part.

TC as far as I'm concerned either save the extra parts for another give away or give them away as second and third prizes. What do ya think?

If you send anything please provide your forum name, team name, and any other details needed. I appreciate the help, but I don't want to end up with too many parts that will need to be returned once the raffle is over.

When is the raffle?
Hasn't been decided - everybody sort of dropped the discussion as to how it should be conducted this time.

hrm
I honestly think we should wait for Phase II to be honest :( But that's just my thoughts.
J
I'm starting to think the same thing.
Phase two sounds better to me:) Tim, I am going to see what I have left after building a machine and will send what I can spare:D
Not a huge deal to me either way. PhaseII is fine. :)

I think that the end of SETI I is very near it will be good to have it now better than when SETI II starts, but that's my opinion.

it depends if it is intended to induced new contributors to join the team for phase I or II
LEt's say we want to secure the ebst team position when phase I stops: rule should be : you have to join at the latest between 1 and 28 of Feb (to allow some checking of behavior) and stay with overclockers.com Seti team till Berkeley no longer accepts WU.
or we want to induce people to join phase 2, then we make the raffle open to anyone joining the team within the first 30 days of seti II launched.

For what it is worth, I joined when I did because of this post. SETI was interesting, but the thought of winning something for donating my cpu time was really fun.
If a vote is being taken, I vote for sooner rather than later. After all, this equipment ought to be crunching as soon as possible!
Being that the point of a give away was to spur renewed interest and gain new members I think the point of the would be lost being we are coming down to the wire of Phase I.
I think this would be a terrific draw to Phase II, and who's to say by phase II start we won't have sponsorship for a new contest like folding's which has solidly brought on enough new members and renewed interest to start a push for second place.
Just my two cents.
J
I agree - it would be like selling more tickets to the movie when it's about over.
