When a friend of mine told me a few weeks back that AMD has a patent allowing them to use hyperthreading type technology I didn't really believe him . But here is a link that confirms it :
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=6773
Patent Office : http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&u=/netahtml/search-adv.htm&r=1&p=1&f=G&l=50&d=ft00&S1=5,944,816.WKU.&OS=PN/5,944,816&RS=PN/5,944,816
We may well see hyperthreaded Hammers next year . Of course that may be a dream realised with a different version of Hammer lateron it is indeed a possibility .

not exactly, the patent "could" work, but it owuld have to use different technology than Intel, as they have specific patents covering the specific technology in hyperthreading. This means that AMD has the rights to a multithreaded processor, not the exact technology used in HTing. That and AMD would have to put specific silicon in the chips to make it possible, which isn't likely there and not used, as AMDs primary goal is to keep manufacturing costs down so they can compete with intel.
This does mean that AMD has looked into the possibility of SMT and may have a project in the works, but I wouldn't look for it in the original Hammer, maybe it will appear futher down the line. But only as long as AMD can continue research and development on that tech in the face of financial difficulty

I agree AMD multithreading isn't going to be the same as Intel's but the question is ............... do they intend to use it ? If so when and how soon ?
Will it be similar to Intel , in that when Intel announced their official first HT cpu the 3.06 several makers were then able to get older boards to use HT . Also there are a few ppl who have been able to make other C1 stepping Intels hyperthread .
Will this be a hidden feature like with Intel ? Likely not ............. but interesting to speculate .
AMD will not be able to call it hyperthreading but being the first to market it is a name that for now will stick with multithreaded tech till someone else debuts there's .

I dont think AMD needs to bother with hyper threading since I've heard there next generation K9 is supposed to be Multicored and supports multiple threads at once!

It all depends on how soon the K9 comes . Intel has multicore plans as well , but if optimised hyperthreading software eats too much into AMD's performance and the K9 is late ; AMD may need a stop gap . With that said I don't expect they will use it .
Well, AMD does have the hypertransport bus going for them. With such a bus, the cores (up to 8 I think on the server chips) can talk to each other and share the increased memory bandwidth from the onboard memory controllers. I heard that eventually they'll be able to make multiprocessor systems by just putting 2 cores on 1 chip!

Think of the heat :D you would need one really big heatsink and fan
MMMM dual core goodness (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=6977)
If I remember correctly, I think the IBM/Sony/Toshiba Chip is also multicored. Difference is that it aint quite been built yet and can have upto 16 cores.

from what i remember...one of IBM's server super computer chips...heh...has like 6 or 8 cores on one die (quite possibly 16) i read about that in like, MAXIMUM PC a while ago. but..yeah...d00d...those things must need like....MASSIVE cooling...for a server filled with 8-core-die'd chips....wheph...
