im helping out my fathers friends buisness~
They apparently got dsl, and tried to install it~ well they COULD not get the siginal to come threw to the phones when using the line filter~ now they use a digital phone system (comp controlled)~ where i believe that i need to filter the line that goes into the system, no idea how to do this......i need a backwards line filter......
In other words..... nothings working....... and i realy dont want to rip apart the system........... anyone have any ideas? the lines that go into the system have a phone jack, but the other end is directly hardwired into a pannel~

i'm pretty sure when "they" hook up ADSL in your house they play around with the box outside and add some wires for adsl to some of your phone outlets, you may have to re-wire a phone jack.

no, no , no, its all hooked up, i know what the problem is now, i need to install a filter into the "line in" to the system, and patch a line BEFORE the filter for the DSL~ im not that stupid.......

The Spyder, if you want I can go down stairs and let you know exactly how it's done ? If so I'll have to do it once it's light out cuz I'mascared to go in my basement @ night time ;) lol j/k it's in a dark cornner and I've got no flash light so it's easyer just to wait untill there is light shining in the window.

Digital errr... no.
I only use 2 wires for my DSL. I used some 2 alligator clips on my junction box in the basement. Red and green I beleive. I then run the line to my room. 2 wires, both my phone and DSL run off those 2 wires.
And when the DSL service was started they never came into the house. Now you can convince me very easily that outside of the house they add a few extra lines at the pole for whatever reason.

ADSL uses the same wires as the normal plug , they don't rewire anything. The "modem" (it's not modem it's terminal =P) uses 2 wires and the other 2 are used by the phone.

Helped me wire up a POTs filter in my quest for higher speeds. It did squat though as I'm obviously being capped by the tele company and theres nothing I can do about it.

thats right :) because it's not liek cable, your speed is limited by your ISP.

Actually, as I stated, its being limited by Verizon because they cap everyone @ 768/128, not Earthlink, who is my actual ISP. Earthlink provisions enough for 1500/128, but since Verizon is the line carrier, they just go ahead and cap everyone.
I was just trying to see if my interior phone line was keeping me from hitting the cap by splitting the line at the NID and doing away with those DSL filters. No change at all with my line speed.

Ok. This is how DSL works.
Phone lines have 4 wires inside them. You home phone only uses two of the lines (if you only have one phone number). DSL uses the other two.
What they do is install a splitter into the NID (box on the outside of your house) for DSL and run two of the wires (usually red and green) to the splitter, then to the inside of the house.
What I would do if I where you is to open the NID, find the DSL splitter (it will be marked) and see what color lines are hooked up to it and run a new line from there to the DSL modem. Then just put a splitter on the NID for the main line coming into the digital system.

Ummmm............ i agree and disagree...... and am confused........ DSL uses 1 line (2 wires) and uses a higher freq. then phones, the reason you need filters is the remove the buzz or static casued by the higher freq. ~ my house or ANY homes ive worked with DSL in have nothing in the NIDs, and run like i said above........

You are correct Spyder. The DSL signal uses the same 2 wires that the analog telephone voice uses, just a higher frequency. When DSL was first introduced, the line carrier (your tele company that maintains the phone line) had to physically come to your residence and install a POTs filter directly next to your NID. The POTs filter seperates the frequencies so you would have 2 lines; 1 for the DSL, and 1 for your normal phones.
But engineers figured out that with simple filters installed for every phone, you wouldn't need to have a POTs filter installed. Hence the arrival of Do-It-Yourself DSL kits. Only downside to those filters is that each one is like adding on another couple of hundred feet of phone line to your DSL. This could result in slower speeds, and they aren't always 100% effective at filtering out all the frequencies. But that did away with the cost of having a technician come and install a POTs filter and wire your home.
If it is a place of business that your trying to setup, I would suggest going with a POTs filter instead. It would mean you would have to run an extra wire for the DSL, but in the long run it would be easier to maintain since no filters would be involved at every phone. Especially if no one knows what they are and decide to remove them because they think it serves no purpose hanging from the phone.
