View Full Version : P6 core to live on in mobile sector
I was just browsing around and noticed that the upcoming Banias mobile processor will be based on the P6 core. That's like a 77m transistor, 25W, 1.0~1.6ghz+, 400FSB, 1024k L2, 0.13 micron PIII with SSE2 and advanced power management.
And it'll make the transition to 0.09 under the name "Dothan" starting at 1.8ghz (21W) with a rumored 2048k L2 cache.
That's quite a lifespan for the P6 core, considering it was introduced in 1995 on a 0.60 process running at 150mhz.

This is the first I've heard of it being a descendant of the P6 core -- where'd you read that? If it's true, I suspect it would have to be a very heavily revised P6 uarch.
It's power consumption figures are impressive though. There will actually be some versions of Banias that require as little as 7W. I wouldn't be surprised to see Banias notebooks with 5.5-6 hours of battery life late next year.
