Hey All,
I just want to know what's a good combination for overclocking to reach 3ghz for the price. Should I get a 2.4B and overclock it or get a higher CPU??? There is no way I'll get a 3.06...lol Here is the list I need an advice on.

CPU: 2.4B, 2.5, 2.66???
Motherboard:???
Memory: ???

Thanks
Mike

Well IMHO:

P4 2.53 or 2.66 gives the best chance of hitting 3ghz. (Best odds of hitting 3 ghz is with the C1 stepped cpus.)

Asus P4PE or Abit IT7 series is about as good a group of mobos as you gonna find.

Memory is easy: Corsair XMS 3200 or 3500. If you can swing it get the 3500.

With the above combos you stand a better than not chance of hitting 3ghz. Say 75-80% odds in your favor.

Cheers,
Mike

I was trying to decide the same thing a week ago. I decided on the 2.66. I got a DOA P4PE so I can't tell you yet if I made a good choice.

Hey All,
Thanks for the replies. I was thinking about the Gigabyte 8PE667 Pro. The only thing is I don't know if this mother board is a great overclocker.

Thanks

I have a P4PE and a 2.8 procesor, with 1024 megs of corsair 2700 memory.
I just got it up to 3.09 at FSB 588 and the memory clocked in at 2766 with Sandra

I don't think they suck. I think each person has his own perspective. The gigabytes get a lot of great reviews for their price.

I'm going to try the Albatron board with a 3.06 P4. I'm hoping this combination will get me there ;)

Just have to point out that if you are going to buy a 2.53 or 2.66Ghz chip to clock it to about 3Ghz, then a Rambus system will kick any other system. Up to 160Mhz 4x turbo is feasible on a rdram board and will deliver hella bandwidth...

For overclocking, I'd stay with Abit or Asus motherboards, they are proven classic overclockers. One of the best mobos on the market right now is the Abit IT7 Max2 version 2.0 or if you're on a budget, the Abit BD7-II. With a DDR system, you want a low multiplier, but the 2.4B CPUs are still hit and miss for reaching 3 gig. The 2.53 might be a good compromise. The best shot of those you mentioned would be the 2.66 @ 150 FSB for 3 gig (since all 2.66 are C1 steppings). With XMS PC3200 DDR, you should be able to run 3:4 memory ratio and have a good overclock and good memory bandwidth.

While Fizz is right about RDRAM still edging DDR out, you'll be hard pressed to find any PC1066 that will run 4X at 160 FSB. Not saying it can't be done, but the odds will be against you.

Batboy, I got a question, maybe a problem I can't figure out.
I have a 2.53 oc'ed to 3.02ghz. In Sandra Unicode I cannot for the life of me get that cpu to score higher than a 2.66 in the cpu Arithmetic benchmark in the FPU/SSE2 section. And even the alu test is not consistent, sometimes scoring less than a 2.8ghz. Any ideas as to why?

Cheers,
Mike

I think the odds are good if you take care to select the proper modules in this case, batboy. More specifically, I suggest to pick the Samsung GDFO -CT9 parts. These are the latest and greatest and should clock up to 160Mhz fine.
Googlegear carries these parts in 512Mb quantities for about $250... a killer deal. If only I lived in the US. =S

Hey All,
Thanks for all the replies. I currently have a couple of old crucial 256mb of PC 2100. Can I still use these with the P4PE and how high can I get overclock with them??

Thanks

Hey All,
I finally got my new cpu and motherboard. I got a P2.66 and Asus P4PE/L. I was able to reach 3.10ghz with my old 256 Crucial PC2100 :D . The maximum FSB is 155. If I get new memory PC3200 would I be able to go above 155 FSB??? Would I see a big difference in performance. Currently, my 3dmark score is 14036 using 42.01 drivers.

Intel 2.66 OC 3.10
Asus P4PE/L
Crucial 256 PC2100
Win XP Pro
Visiontek TI440 OC 305/650
Quantum Hard drive

Thanks Again
Mike

Nice overclock. Have you tried running Prime95 at 160 FSB/3.2 GHz??

my 2.4b c1 hts 3ghz, but isnt stable. Had to clock it down to 2.7 with rdram running at 1200...And a p4pt-533R board from asus. I get huge membandwidth of 3.7Gb so i am happy :D

Why is it that you want a low mult? I would imagine a higher one would be better to hit higher oc's. Also, can someone refresh my memory as to who are the retailers who specifically sell c1 stepping P4's, say ie. the 2.4?

im going to buy the 2.4 probly within the week so the longer i wait the better my chances are of getting the c1?? its from newegg by the way only about 1/4 of the people have gotten c1 so wheres the best place to get them right now
