I just got a Toshiba laptop (satellite 1115) for $500 at Best Buy (see cyber deals forum for details) and it has a 1.5 ghz Celeron supposedly. It also has a fan which I haven't seen in a laptop before. I read two reviews, one that said that it was a desktop CPU and another that said that it wasn't. Does anyone know the story behind this CPU?

It seems like a great deal and the fan rarely comes on but I was curious.

I don't think there are any "mobile" Celerons. It's just a Tualatin-based desktop Celeron that they've slapped into a laptop.

Sounds like a good, deal. I'll bet the fan stays on if you run Prime for an hour though.

I dont know for sure but I think a 1.5 might be a P4 based mobile celeron. Run cpu-z http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php and it will tell you all the info you need

OK, so I got interested in this and decided to run this utility on my Toshiba 1405-s173 which has a Celeron 1.5 in it. In the interests of saving bandwidth I'll not post the screenshot, but here's the info:

Processor:
Name: Intel Mobile Celeron
Code Name: Northwood Brand ID: 15
Package: mPGA-478B
Technology: 0.13u(that's the greek letter thingie that looks like a combined u and y)
Specification: Mobile Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 1.50GHz
Family: F Model: 2 Stepping: 4
Ext. Family: 0 Ext. Model: 0 Revision: B0
Instructions: MMX, SSE, SSE2

Clocks:
Core Speed 1495.1 MHz

Cache:
L1 Data: 8 Kbytes
L1 Trace: 12 kuops
Level 2: 256 Kbytes

So I'd say there certainly IS a mobile Celeron. I'd be surprised if this WASN'T a mobile Celeron--it's cool as a cucumber. I had a Duron 900 notebook before this and that thing got HOT. Plus I get 2+ hrs battery life using aps and 1:30+ watching DVD's. Usually the mobile models get about half that.

Somebody posted that the 1115 model at Best Buy was a desktop processor, but I couldn't find anything on Toshiba's website that said that. I'd recommend you use this utility. Also, if you look at the processor in Device Manager, it should tell you if it's a mobile. Mine is reported as "Mobile Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 1.5GHz"

Hope this helps. Let us know what CPU you got, ok? :D

Ok, I ran it too. Pretty much the same except the stepping is 7. The fsb is 99.7, bus is 398.8. DDR PC2100 SDRAM (256 in one of the 2 slots - maybe I'll put in another 256). Northwood indeed.

I guess it's time to try some games.

Pretty interesting. If that is a mobile chip, then you really got a REALLY sweet deal. How's your battery life? If it's a mobile chip that you've got I'd not be surprised if you got more battery life than me. I've got the 15" TFT and the 14.1 would eat less battery. I paid $999 for mine. Could have gotten TWO of yours for that. Still, I don't feel ripped off at all. Go Toshiba!

BTW, sounds like you've got the exact same chip--I get 99.7 FSB and 398.7 bus.

Good luck with the games. I'm pretty sure your GPU is a dog--and track pad gaming sucks. Plan on getting a mouse and playing 2d games (Civ 3 anyone?).
