Ok I know everyone says that AMD has better cost/performance ratio. But isn'tthis gap narrowing? And what benchmarks favour AMD, can you explain reason why? What is benefit of more operations per clock cycle?

I'm suppose to build system for my dads friend,he wants Intel. But i wanna all my arguments in order before I go convincing him to go AMD.

I he can afford Intel products and wants Intel, build him Intel.

I like playing around and saving a few bucks while still getting "close-to-top-of-the-line" performance, which is why I chose AMD over Intel in my last upgrade.

The gap is pretty narrow if you buy a top of the line cpu. As soon as you go down to the 2100+ mark, AMD delivers BY FAR the most bang for the buck.

And what benchmarks favour AMD, can you explain reason why?

Would you want to convince a person with biased benchmarks ? That seems hardly fair, or am i misunderstanding you ?
Benchmarks differ mostly when SSE2 or 3DNOW are involved. They are Intel - AMD specific (resp).

What is benefit of more operations per clock cycle?

Eh.. do more per clockcycle ?
If your car car can spin your wheels at a certain rpm, then you will go faster with bigger wheels. Even though the rpm is the same.

Sorry I should rephrase that!! What benchmarks are the AMD cpus more likely to beat the Intel in, also why is this? Dunno if that is any better!!

What is really important in your choice is how much does he want to spend? Wether its faster or not, Intel products are more expensive than their AMD equals for the most part. Your choice should also depend on what he is using this pc for. No sense in spending top dollar on a pc that will be used for e-mail and surfing. And no sense skimping out on it if he is doing gaming, video editing, etc. I think you get my point. :D
And IMO hdj is right, dont used anything bias towards one or the other unless the person understand what SSE2 and 3DNOW! really means. I build pc's for people all the time and when they ask, I tell then the best bang for the buck is AMD hands down. And if the cant decide still, I show them the price difference it would be for them to pick Intel . Then they usually decide pretty fast. AMD:D

And the only place I really see the price/performace gap narrowing is in the lower-mid line processors. (AMD 1600-2100 and the lower P4's like the 1.8) . The reason the gap may appear to be closing in the top end CPU's is because AMD is taking there sweet time releasing there new processors. And thats my 2 cents.
And you should take into concideration that you are in a overclocking forum so most people answer question from a overclockers point of view. I look at Intel myself and think' why pay $200+ for this chip when I can pay $60 bucks for one with $50 worth of fan and copper and make it just as fast?'. Someone that doesnt OC doesnt usually see things this way.
