View Full Version : Is the SLK800 better than my Glaciator?

I'm looking to lower my temps without going back to watercooling. I currently have an original lapped Glaciator and it works fairly well. I was wondering if I go with an SLK800 and a variable speed Thermaltake 80mil fan will my temps go down enough to warrant the cost? Give me some opinion please. I'm gonna order this thing soon if its worth doing. Thanks in advance.

To get the best performance from the SLK-800 or even the SK-7, you'll need a Tornado or Delta 80 fan. With either fan, the slk-800 will outperform your glaciator and give you lower temps.

yeah, the thermalright cooler will get you more performance. the SLK-800 is top dog (or one of the top dogs) in air cooling.
cost? depends on how much money you've got. but it'll be cheaper than water.

also keep in mind that more cooling, while always a good thing, does not guarantee better overclocks. I'd say that going from the already decent 'sink you've got to the top class heatsink is not really going to get you many more MHz.

what are your temps now overclocked?

i've heard that the SLK-800 is one of the best at the moment.

What's a "glaciator"? :p

the slk-800 is like the s600 for mercedes.
i think the slk is prolly the best air cooling solution out now.
go for it!

I'd go with the SLK-800 and NF2.. :)

try the new vantec aeroflow -- quiet, cost effective, and works VERY well.

I'm thinking the mobo temps reported aren't correct anyway. Idle I'm listing at 47.5C!!! That's crazy. On my Epox mobo I was generally about 100 F full load. Does this 2200 run that much warmer? I dont think so. I may hook this all up in my water cooled rig to see if the temps go way down. Whats an NF2?

Nforce 2; a new type of mobo or mobo chipset as far as i know. Not sure what it's features and/or benefits are though. Maybe someone could enlighten both of us?

Yeah nf2 is nvidias new amd chipset. Not sure what it has to do with heatsinks though hehe.

Get the slk-800 all the reviews give it top marks. If/when you install it take a good look at the base and lap it if you see any machining marks. Also don't forget to install the little sticky circle cushions at each corner of the base. Since the base is so narrow the cpu cushions are useless and unless you're careful you will scratch or chip the die.

I always lap them but thanks for the cushion tip. I will pay special attention to them. Thanks again

I've just had a proper look at the slk- yea, very nice :D.

One thing- why do the Intel mobo's have that big attatching thing around the socket? it this to stop excessive pressure on the CPU?
