If you dont belive me, here ya go.

How is this possible. I ran it at 2.4 and it ran fine and stable with stock cooling. A friend of mine and I punched it up to 2.7 and loaded just fine, played around with some stuff and it ran, but to be on the safe side I dropped it back down to 2.0.

We wanted to go faster but thought we should get a better fan and heatsink before we tried.

Sorry I meant to put it in general computer chat. I would like to put it on the database as well.

Actually this should go in Intel Cpu's

yah, intel cpus...

but before you put it in the database, run some benchmarks.

i seriously doubt thats the least bit stable

could a mod move this pleaz???

I had a 1.8 @ 2.7. It's VERY possible, and mine was 100% stable

Thank You Mr. Moderator Man.

And I am not sure myself just how stable it would be at 2.7 we were trying for 3.0 but just could not squeak it. Now becuase I am pretty new to this overclocking stuff. I have left the voltage at 1.52 and have just been cranking the FSB up. I am using a stock fan and heatsink. What should be my next tweak. If it is fan that I need can someone send me a link or a pic of what a better one looks like.

The only one that I would recommend is Thermalright's AX-478. OUSTANDING cooler that attaches directly to the stock heatsink clip.

I agree, yet I'm finding it hard to find right now.

so how about the ALPHA PAL8942T

take a look at this (http://http://www.newegg.com/app/Showimage.asp?image=35-112-003-01.JPG/35-112-003-02.JPG/35-112-003-03.JPG)

it's more money then the AX-478, yet it is better.

I too would still go for the AX-478 if you can find it.
it's cheaper, almost as good as the best alpha's and swifteck's, and is easy to install (and uninstall).

good luck

mica

edit: seems the linky dosn't work, sorry.

very possible, most of the new 1.8a's do it on default voltage.;)

my current chip does it on default, i dont run it at default because the mobo sucks.

Nice overclock. Some of those 1.8A are quite the performers.

Capt. Fiero, I'm assuming you must have a Pontiac Fiero? I had three Fieros at one time, but I'm down to just one now. It has a V8 (Chevy 350) in it with lots of mods. I love my little Fiero.

I checked the database and it is showing people running 1.7-1.8v and only getting 2.1-.2.2ghz out of theres. I was really curious as to why. But it sounds like most people are getting well over 2.0 and just not posting it on the database.

Don't know. Any 1.8a I had did AT LEAST 2.4 @ default voltage.

I had two 1.8a. Both only make it to 2.29Ghz. I recently got a 1.8a c1...waiting for a new motherboard. With my luck, it will max out at 2.29Ghz again. lol

I just set up a new system last night using an Abit BD7-II and 1.8A B0 stepping CPU. It ran an easy 2.4 gig on default voltage with the retail cooler and Arctic Silver.

Yep, I've been a member of Pennocks Fiero Forum for 3-1/2 years.

That's what I was thinking too, JD. Might not be the CPU that's the bottleneck. This is in his signature:

512mb Samsung PC800@1016

Looks to me like he ain't getting any better overclock because of the RAM can't go higher. Either try setting the memory at 3X or get PC1066 instead.

Roof Jumper
12-24-02, 11:17 AM
Yeah bud, it looks like your ram is fritzing out on you. Do as people are saying, put it to 3x or get yourself some nice PC1066.

Thanks Guys for the advice,
I don't think its my rams. I can't even get into Windows with 3x at 133 fsb. :( I am pretty sure its the motherboard holding me back. Waiting for a granite bay board.

Thanks for all the input guys. We did get it to boot and run at 2.88ghz but it was not stable with stock cooling. At 2.4 it is stable as a rock. Temps around 39C

The only thing not stock about the cooling is all the case fans. 2 on the back (not counting the powersupply) one on the side. Plus one on the front bringing air in.

what type of boards and processors were you using and where can I get them at? how much were they as well?

Capt Fiero
12-30-02, 07:41 PM
Intel P4 Northwood. On an ASUS P4B 266-C motherboard PC2100 ram. To see pics of the case that it is all housed in you can go to

http://www.david.westcoastfieros.com/newcase

I also use ALL round IDE cables to add in cooling. A promise IDE controller card. I checked the CPU database. (did not know this before) but becuase I have a northwood processor. 2.4 is considered a normal to low overlcock. Some people are geting 3+ghz out of these 1.8's. When I bought this stuff I really did not know that it was something special. You can buy it at any computer place that sells it. There is even a write up on it in the overlcockers pages. http://www.overclockers.com/articles616/index04.asp
mine is the SL63X version proccessor.

I would try it higher, run prime95 and some 3dmark to check for stability, if stable, go even higher, and repeat.

I guess you dont realize how new I am too this. Until I showed up here about 3 weeks ago, I had never heard of Prime95 and I really don't know what a 3dmark is. I have a frew programs that I use to judge stability. (just graphics programs that can run automated and will resize and build web gallerys with 100's of pics)

I also need to find a good free motherboard temp monitor. For now i have just been checking it in the bios. Which is kinda dumb becuase I want to see the temp on the fly.

Asus boards come with Asus Probe and you can get latest version from
http://www.asus.com/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=Tools

Prime95 can be downloaded here

Direct link:

3dmark can be downloaded here:

Thanks Guys, a ton of thanks. I am downloading it all right now. Thank god for cable internet. HeHe. Ok the asus probe is installed and so is the prime95. The asus probe is freaking cool it is exactly what I was looking for. As for the Prime95 not quite sure exactly what to make of it, but I will run it and see what it comes up with.

My 1.8a BO stepping is running at 3006MHz at 1.625 volts. This is completly stable, I can run prime for days with 3dmark looping on top of it. I have let it go for as long as 96 hours and have not yet been able to make anything crash. If I go one more step on the fsb though (168) I get nothing no post, no boot just nothing no matter the voltage.

It will run stable at dafault voltage at 2.97GHz.

It is on an Iwill P4HT mobo and I'm using a Koolance Exos.

I had it running at the same speeds without water cooling but it would get so hot that I only let it run for about a minute and then shut it down. So don't know how stable it would have been with air cooling at this speed.

Some times you just get lucky

Sorry for the delay. Sold my Rdam rig so was out of a computer for two months waiting for the Granite Bay board. Finally back in action. I got the C1 from a Dell pull. Its running at 2.7Ghz on default volatge now.
