View Full Version : Catalyst drivers cause defrag to lock up???

Ok I got my new A7N8X mobo and installed it yesterday. I rebuilt the machine from scratch, installing windows ME. I have a standard order of installing things with defrags in between. As I am getting past the standard stuff and into the utilities I go to do a defrag (which I have done a couple of times now) and it locks on the little window where you pick the drive letter to defrag.

Well I was not 100% sure which apps I had installed since the last defrag so I have now rebuilt the machine a 2nd time, defragging in between every single install. Sure enough when I install the catalyst 2.5 drivers defrag locks up every time before it even starts defragging the hd.

Has anyone seen or heard of this before? If it helps any I am using windows ME and direct X 9.0 (why video drivers or directx would matter is beyond me!).

Does it matter that I go straight to the downloaded installs without installing the ati stuff from the disk first? I have never owned a card before that cared about that. Weird thing is I had run the 2.5s for some time (upgrading from 2.4s) without issue.

A little more info on this very bizzare problem. I uninstalled the 2.5s and used the original disk that came with the card (I think I forgot to mention its a radeon 9700) and I still experienced the problem. If I boot into safe mode I can defrag no problemo.

When the defrag window pops up it normally has a dropdown for you to select your drive to defgrag and it has a couple of lines of copywrite info as well as a little intel application launch accelerator logo. Well when it locks up all that I see is the dropdown. The text and the logo are not displayed. Makes me wonder if its a font issue with that text (I would find that hard to believe since I have not found an issue like this in any other app and I have tried loading every font on my machine) or maybe a problem with this intel application launch accelerator?

ME is the worst operating system since Windows 95. Go with 98SE or XP pro, or even 2000. ANYTHING but ME.

Well said, hehe

But ive never heard of a problem like that...could be that u got a bad Windows install (happens sometimes...Windows just likes to be gay and have tons of problems on a fresh install, heh)

Well odd thing about it is that this is with multiple installs of me. I had no issues with multiple installs of me on my old motherboard. The problem definatly arises when the catalyst drivers are installed too since I can uninstall and reinstall all day and the problem appears and disappears.

I am planning on switching oses soon but I am a defrag junky so this is killing me! I hafta boot to safe mode to defrag. Up until now everything else about the system seems fine which is just freaky to me.

use norton systemworks defragger, MS defrag is CRAP also loose ME , you can d/l the drivers direct from ATI you do not need the cd.

Use the Cat 3.0 with DX 9 I have not had any prob and imho I think defragging between every install is overkill

you can give omega drivers a whirl
