Thinking about getting a Dlink DI-604 mainly b/c their cheap and I dont have over $50 to spend on a router but I've never used or dealt with a dlink router before and need some opinions. Here is the link http://www.dlink.com/products/broadband/di604/

I'm currently using a Netgear with no probs but my roommate is moving and taking it with him cuz its his. I got an SMC for my parents DSL and they never have any problems with it but they cost a few $$$ more that I can afford right now.

I will not even consider buying a linksys router because I have dealt with too many linksys problems.

Anybody else have a recommendation for a good cheap 4 port router?

btw: I'm on cable (cox)

I am not sure I would recomend one or not. I have a DI-704P. I originally bought it for the print server built in, it was cheaper than the lone print server. For some reason it would not work as a dhcp client and would not talk to my main Netgear router. I then had a problem with my DSL and to elimate the router as a problem I swapped it with the DLink. It has been there for about 3 weeks with no problem as a DHCP server.

It works and is cheap, but is not doing everything I want it to do.

I have the 604 model, and I am pretty unhappy with it. It suffers from random reseting which was supposed to be fixed in the last 3 firmware updates. Yet it still reboots on it own at random times. If you don't like linksys, then I sugest looking for a netgear alternative.

What do you mean by reseting? I have the same exact router and it's wonderful. I thinkI got mine $20 after mir.

My friend just bought one and I helped him set it up. It seems to work fine, but we had to take the fist one back because it had power issues. It would lose power and we had to giggle the AC jack to get it to power back on.

I own and use the DI-704P (like Ridenow) and love it--especially for its print server function. It works entirely as advertised for me with no problems with an additional hub that is connected through its uplink port. I have Win98/ME/XP machines hanging off it and all can print to the printer.

All the reviews I have read of the 604 say it is an awesome value for the price. I would go for it if I needed to save money and didn't want the print server feature.

Well it's a great value I have to say that. I just got mine for $60CND(AMIR). It's pretty good I used to have the random reset problem but got the newest firmware and it seems to be gone. It's not the best router out there but for the money it gets the job done. I've heard good and bad things about it but for me it's working great. With a life time warrenty it's hard to beat. It isn't as fast as some other router I've dealt with.
I also suggest getting some Older model USR routers with Printer server.

was looking in the cyber deals forum today and Belkin has a 50% off deal on everything and their 4 port router which would also put me under my $50 limit.

The model is F5D5230-4

Opinions seem mixed on the d-link so what do you guys think about the belkin vs. dlink?

Can't speak about Belkin equipment as I've never used their stuff before (other than their cables) but I recommended the DI-604 to my brother back when they were going for like $30 after MIR. Not the best router but it does the job. I have read a lot of bad reviews about it though. You can see what other people thought about it here:

DI-604 (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/opinions/index.asp?pid=470)

It's not rated very high but if you get one that works it seems to do the job.

Thanks for that link...plenty of info there. Most people there were simply complaining about bad support which probably means that they had no idea what they were doing anyway.

I dont plan to use any advanced features I just want something that wont crap out on me.

Just an update to this thread, I found an SMC 4 port router w/built print server for $50 so I ended up getting that one instead of the d-link

just took a bit of hunting to find what I needed for the price I wanted

Well my SMC router came in last week and I got it setup the other day. Works great and setup was easy. I forgot how small they were compared to most of the others. Pages seem to load a bit quicker now too compared to my roommates netgear.
