i would start by trying different drivers...you should be getting at least 72fps in CS which is the max set by the CS engine....CS is no challenge to an 8500.....

dont know if it will increase your performance but in the shortcut properties put -32bpp that makes the game run at 32bits color

Its the half-life engine that has wierd FPS maxes. Cant remember if theres a way around them. I used to max at 72fps with my GF2 (dont have radeon but helpnig with CS fps max) but reinstalled with my friends HL copy and fps maxes out now at 60. dunno its wierd, will look for command to up the max fps, if its there.

32bit colour will offer worse performance compare to 16bit, but try it and see by how much...on my old GeForce 2 it was terrible, its fine with this.
you set your framerate cap in the config files, 100 is the max - make sure your running in OpenGL, D3D is known for bad performance in that game (I believe it wasnt intended for it)
is Vsync enabled? - I have it on, as its better with than without IMHO, but I have noticed that keeps things into some sort of set config to do with your monitors refresh:
e.g.
I play in 1280x960 which my monitor supports at 85Hz, so my max FPS therefore is 85FPS but when it gets heavy it drops to 42.5FPS which is exactly half, might be something to do with the prerender limit, but im yet to try it on a different value.
what settings are you running in? AF? AA? - I would of though the processor in your sig would of well pulled that card to an easy 100FPS solid in CS but maybe if you have all stuff like that its letting you down

i play in 800x something opengl but everything in the game is really fast and ff is off too
I run cs at 800x600 and i'm only getting like 75 fps when other games that old are getting 2x that. Everything looks good but I don't think all the settings are all the way up. It's smooth though, that's all I ask for anyway.
type in max_fps 100 in the console, have fun!
(wait...or was that FPS_max...i dont remember...)

i dont want to distract from a possible answer to your question, but why are you concerned with the 40 fps, it isnt choppy or showing other problems is it? the human eye can't discern between more than ~30 fps, so if there isnt a problem besides framerate, and performance in other games is fine, this should make no difference to your gaming experience. of course, that might not make you happy still. good luck. :)

actually, in tribes I can see the choppiness if it dips below 45. Dunno, may just be me.
Uhh. Back on topic k?
If its a steady 40 fps then do what i said and youll be fine.....the fps just defaulted to 40 for some reason

when you pick up on chopiness its because of changes in fps...what that guy said about percieving ~30fps is true...if you played a game in like 30fps SOLID and 100fps SOLID they would be both fine if the 100fps was changing between say 70FPS and 100FPS, then it would start to look bad even though 70FPS is still alot more than 30FPS
type this in CS console
fps_max 100, that should max the fps to 100

Yep or simply change the value in your config.cfg file. By default you should see:
fps_max = 72
Change 72 for 100. ;)
gta3 my favor!!

turn off the vertical-sync for openGL and max the fps out to 100.
and also add me in msn jchenw@hotmail.com so i can play with u and other fds.
i'm getting 60-100 in cs
i assume u know who i am 1-man-army

you thing you've got it bad,
I get really crappy framrate, like 20 or less on my P4 2.85 9700pro!
I wheep for myself...
well, 1.6 is pretty odd...
the new textures are hard on my system, and new tweaks are'nt really out yet...
but as far as the old school stuff, it's all still valid, plus, unless you're a beta-tester you will be playing the totally tweakable vers. 1.5 to which i offer you these:

Paste all of that in there. Save it and name it "autoexec.cfg". Paste the autoexec in the same folder that holds your config.cfg. (cstrike folder)
Just to make sure it loads automatically, type "exec autoexec.cfg" in console, while in game. If it worked right, you will know.
Other Stuff To Do
Right click your desktop>>go to properties>>go to display>>advanced>>choose your video card>>additional properties>>open gl settings>>DISABLE VSYNC, Disable Anti Tropshic filtering.
If you have a good enough video card, you might want to overclock it. Get "RivaTuner" and do it.
Be sure to check your refresh rate in your monitor settings as well. If your refresh rate seems low due to windows XP, search google for Powerstrip. It will unlock your monitors refresh rate. I went from being stuck with 85, to 144 hz.
net-related
-------------------------------------------
cl_updaterate
Default: 20
Suggested: 20-100 depending on bandwidth, if your net_graph is falling and rising decrease this value.
cl_cmdrate
Default: 30
Suggested: Equal to your average framerate (remember max FPS in Half-Life is 99/100) or a divisor of it if your bandwith doesnt handle it. If you have a steady FPS near 99, make sure to put this value above 100.
rate x
x maximum amount of bytes to send and receive from server in a second. Setting this value too low will cause packet loss and setting it too high will cause packet loss.
Suggested values:
3000-5000 for 56k
6000-7000 ISDN
6000-10000 cable/DSL
ex_interp
Default 0.1
Suggested 0.05-0.1
Decreases the interpolation time, i.e the smoothing of the movement. The players will move more jerkily but more accurately.
cl_resend "x". This sets how many times a packet may be resent if it fails. I'd recommend setting x to 1 or 2.
Go to Start -> Run -> msconfig Go to the "services" tab and uncheck anything you see on the following list (keep anything checked that you'll need).

yo have u beta test the cs ver 1.6 i heard it has 2 new rifles and riot shield the 2 rifle is famas and gail is this true?
yea,
shield: pistol only. Can Not use duals... only pistols, cant pick up rifles.
new smoke puffs.
new rifles:
Galil, and Famas. both cheap, both pretty good.
all weapons recieved a make over actually, everything is now accurate... where you fire, the bullets go, much less recoil, at least it aint wild recoil.
friends is really cool, if only for the fact you can play chess/checkers thru it...
maps (certain ones) have been re-made...
seems the whole game is better for the T's
the shield is the CT advantage, but it's so sketchy right now,
i find it useless and unreliable.
tho it's cheap...
sheild is $1000 so if yer saving cash, it's a good option i suppose.
hone yer pistol skills!
