yes it is easier, imo. no downsides that i can think of. an upside is that you dont need a "t" joint like you do for a t-line... joints can reduce flow.
 
I have somewhat of a cross between inline and resivoir. The resivoir is directly attaced to the inlet of the pump. Construction was made possible by scrap .25 acrylic, a hose barb, some JB weld and a 2 liter screw on top. Filling is a sinch. All you do is squirt water from a watterbottle into the top until your system is bubble free.
