need to read tape backup

at my office, we have an old tape drive to backup the main computer. the tape was created using microsoft backup. the office manager wants to get some of the information off the tape for taxes from last year. we dont want to restore the whole the whole system from the tape (everything is backed up on one tape). is there a way to read part of the tape, and maybe just look for the information that we need, short of making a new backup, doing a full restore from the old tape, getting what we need, then re-restoring from the new tape backup (i hope that makes sence). thanks in advance.

I am not that familiar with the MS Backup program, but what I remember is that it does not have the ability to do partial restores, only full restore.
You might try to find documentation on the program on MS's site.
