This discussion refers to waterblocks that are designed to be used on processors, not TEC's.

Cooling beyond 20mm from the center of the block is pointless, because heat won't even get a chance to travel that far, yes? I notice a lot of commercial waterblocks use up much more area than this though. (because they are also trying to accomadate TEC's?). It seems many users designs or leaning towards this after the success of cathars White Water block http://www.theforumisdown.com/uploadfiles/1102/wbdesign555.jpg

Where does block design go from here?

I think the question is one more of "Where does affordable manufacturing technology allow us to go from here?"

Cathar- Agreed.

Would integrated heatpipes allow heat to be spread across an area more quickly, making larger area block designs like the TC-4 or Maze3 more effective?

Dedicated jet impingement for each micro-channel. Wouldn't be affordable though.
