pricewatch.com >> software >> operating systems

XP Home can be had for about $85 ... Pro for $130 or so. Be careful ... a lot of the cheaper deals are "COA Only" or "No Media" ... which means you only get the sticker and the manual - NO CD. This is good if you already have a CD, and want to install XP on a second or third box.

Fry's Electronics have the Win XP Home upgrade for $79.99 until tomorrow, I believe...

Can the upgrade be used for a full install with a Win 98 key, without having to install Win 98 itself? I am sure I read somewhere that this can be done.....

Any upgrade release can be used for a full install. You just need to provide proof that you have a valid license for one of the required OS releases. And the install process prompts you for it.

EDIT: Here's a wild question for you ... are you absolutely set on XP? Win2K is a very good release, but without many of the "features" that cause so much grief with some people.

Exactly, I got Xp pro full for $10 off of my friend who goes to a major university. If you have a win98 cd then if you were doing a fresh install windows setup will prompt you to insert the media of a previous operating system. If you wanted to just get Xp home upgrade then itd work. From my vendors at work I got another 2 liscences of pro full for $89 each with a $1000 purchase.. well they didnt want the XP copies so I picked them up. You DO NOT have to install 98 or ME .. etc before installing XP, I know this for a fact. Ive done it on multipule machines as described above for customers.

If you are a student go to the campus software store and ask. USually near the book section where you buy your textbooks.
