My old system.
1600xp
Albatron cheap motherboard
256 Samsung ddr2100
nvidia geforce 4
linux slackware
Temps around 50-58
New system
1800 Tbred
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
2x256 Samsung DDR2300
nVidia GeForce 4 3123 nVidia drivers
linux slackware
Temps around 45c These temps were from Windows Asus Probe, and Mother Board Monitor... i dual boot just incase i totaly screw linux and need on the web.
Now the bios temp gauge says it's smoking! Around 70-80c Dont know what to beleive. If it were that hot it would have been smoked by now eh'? Also, this MB has an automatic shutoff if it gets too hot, HS isn't hot to the touch, etc...
Never had any problems with linux untill i changed motherboards. Now i get a jerky mouse, jerky games, and total lockups. Linux isn't supposed to lockup! I have everything that is not needed turned off in the bios, onboard sound, onboard NIC's, USB,etc.. I run a game server and a Web page from this computer and it gets annoying to come home and it be locked up. You can see from my sig that i can get it to OC. But it also does this at stock settings.
In the old kernel setup i had "VIA" chipset support. I took that out because of course i no longer have via chipsets. That is the only thing in the kernel i took out. Is there a package to download for this MotherBoard? I know there are Sound/Nic card drivers. But i don't use either from this MB, so i didn't install them...
Anyone have any ideas? I sure would appreciate it.
Edited: Here's what i get when i try to install the nForce2 drivers from asus.
cc1: Invalid option `-falign-functions=4'
make[1]: *** [nvnet.o] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/Larry/nforce/nvnet'
make: *** [nvnet_make] Error 2
I read that this package installs a IDE controller driver. This may be the cause of my problems. As the more the HD is running, the worse my probs get.
Of course the nvnet.o is not on my drive, it is supposed to make that with the "make" command. But it errors out. This board is starting to become a great pain in the behind. First the flakiest bios i have ever seen, now this.
