I justed picked up some new JVC headphones the other day that support digital Audio (so they claim), sounds great and all, but they dont seem to want to work with my sound card.

I have a Soundblaster Live, tried the newest creative drives and the defualt Win XP drivers with no luck....

When i enable Digita Audio only i got LOADS of static coming from the Digiatal Out on my Sound Card... I can hardly even make out what is playing. When i have dont select digiatal only and put the headphones in the digiatal jack i can only hear sound if i dont plug the headphones in all the way.....

So i am wondering whats up? what am i doing wrong? or does the sound card need the digital out to be a 4+ speaker setup or something stupid like that.

Anyone have any ideas for me?

I would be very suprised if the headphones themselves have a DAC, which is what they would need to be able to transform the SPDIF signal from the card's digital out to a signal that could be sent as amplification to the speakers in the headphones.

Do they work if you just plug them into the headphone jack? Or do they work with another digital audio source, then it would make sense that they would work with the sound card too.

Another thing you may want to consider is that if the headphones can handle a digital signal then the sound is only as good as the DAC. If these are really good (read: expensive, at least thats usually a good measure of a DAC's quality) headphones then you may get better sound from that than the sound card. But, if these are under $100 I would put good money that the DAC in the card is better than the one in the headphones, so you may be better off feeding them an analog signal

if someone knows more about these "digital" headphones then please speak up
