because many people (like me) don't like round cables. i actually make the wireing in my case cleaner with flat IDE cables then i could with rounded cables. the reason is rounded cables don't bend too well in tight places, i don't like any cables hanging out more then they are needed so a round cable just wouldn't work.

Same reason they don't do away with the floppy. They've been around so long that no one thinks to change them.

Who uses a floppy drive? This is 2003 I vote never to use a sector error reading disk again. All my stuff goes on cd-rs and now adays its more fun to make a bootable windows98 utility cd than a floppy .. My .02
