View Full Version : sound cable
Is theer any advantage is if I use the sound cable going from my cd-rw to teh sound card over just having the sound go through the ide cable?
The only advantage of the cable is that you don't have to think about will or will not the program you are using for playing support the digital transfer.
And imho it is also the only way to use "play" button on yor CD drive(if it has it)

I generally always connect those wires, it doesn't hurt anything to have them connected. The few times I didn't connect them I get no sound on certain older games. I don't think there are disadvantages to connecting them.
Thanx for teh replys guys. thats all I needed to know. Have a nice day.

And more likely going through the IDE cable will give you a better sound quality. The DACs in the CDROM aren't the highest quality in the world. Plus when you use that, you're going from digital (on the disc) to analog, back to digital (at the sound card), it gets mixed with the other sounds, then back to analog again (for output to your speakers). If you go through the IDE cable, it stays digital until it gets converted to analog at the last step.
Thanx avatar that explains alot.
