Thats right! Thanks to Virtual CD (http://www.virtualcd-online.com/) you can rip virtual CD images to your hard drive. So when you lose your game CD, *cough* TheFrag *cough* you can still play the game! An added bonus is that laptop gamers can play longer on a battery charge due to the laptop not having to access the optical drive. I saw this in the current issue of Maximum PC. They rated it 7/10. The only cons were no DVD support(since then a newer version has been released with DVD support) and that there was no significant boost in load times.(To me, thats insignificant). You know what this means too don't you? It means you can make a stand alone server loaded with all your games, network it, and frag on any machine on the network!

i have been using virtual cd for quiet some time now, its great piece of software but have its own share of problems, sometimes cd's simply get "stuck" they won't eject from the virtual drive or won't mount

the new version which "does" supports dvd's apparatnely doesnt works for me upto date i have not been able to make any dvd work with it, i tried making a copy of my FRIENDS dvd, it does makes a virtual image of the dvd and everything but i simply can't play it no matter what i do

overall a great software as i said :)

You can really do that?

Yep! They have three versions:

One is for a stand alone computer

Another is for Terminal Servers

And the last is a network version, which allows network users access the games/applications on the server. You can even program it to restrict certain users on the network.

I hope it doesn't cost any money... because there's a free program called Daemon Tools that does the same thing, and from the sounds of it, I would say that Daemon Tools is better. Of course, I've never used VirtualCD so I can't be sure about that.
Daemon Tools will let you mount 4 cd's at once (not a lot, but I never use more than 3 anyways) and you can mount them from a network drive. You shouldn't need a different version of that VirtualCD program to mount cd's over a network... that just seems silly.

$74 for the 5 user network edition :(
Or does the single user one have the network features?

Use Daemon Tools :)

I know the newest version of clonecd is unable to reproduce a virtual copy of ut2k3, as well as all the other virtual cd apps I've tried, has this changed within' the last few weeks?

I think i have the options set wrong on the program, all the virtual cds are unreadable and it takes 3 hours to make a virtual cd.
What read options should I have turned on/off?

Yes that is an unfortunate side affect. Copy protected CDs can take up to 10 hours to rip, :(

Bleh :(

Well do I have the correct options enabled to correctly make a virtual cd of the cd? It would be a shame to waste 3+ hours when it wont work in the end.

Use damon tools supports DVDs I belive. Don't know if you can do network setup and all though.... Rip an image with clone cd, or winiso and mount it in the virtual drive. Oh and damon tools is FREE!

So far, this thread is ok...but I'm watching it closely. This topic can go places we don't want it to here.. Keep it "on topic" and all will be fine.

use alcohol 120%, blindwrite, deamon tools or clonecd if you want to make a virtual cd of copyprotected games, those can read these games properly.

I was using Virtual CD untill the trial ran out, and it was a great program.
I downloaded daemon tools, but it wont run my "virtual cd"'s cds.
Is there any program that will make them work with daemon tools?

How does Virtual CD affect overall performance? Does it eat a lot of system resources?

I like alcohol 120% it has a virtual cd drive that comes with it. It will also copy protected games. I have a regestered copy of clone cd. Although, in the U.S. the game copy/ amplfy weak sectors portions of the program are disabled. So, in the control / regions section tell your computer you are in the UK or Canada and it works fine.Oh, the newest version of clone cd also comes with a virtual cd drive.

I would definetly recomend to use Deamon.

From the sound of you guys, the other progs only seems to be causing trouble and/or wont work properly. Using Deamin is sooo easy.

Even my mother could use it !!! :D

I have tried both CloneCD virtual drive and Daemon Tools for mounting image. For some reason I have been having trouble with Daemon tools and BF1942...it always freezes about 15 min into the game. If I mount it to CLoneCD virtual Drive it works just Dandy.......never a problem. So From my limited experience I would have to say get cloneCD and you get a nice lil virtual drive with it. Good luck.......

Yeah, I'm using alcohol 120%, and it's worked great so far on both CD's and DVD's. I use clonecd to rip them and alcohol to emulate them, and I haven't had any problems.

so it doesnt just make a standard image of the cds well if not that is bogus you should get like what others are saying winiso and daemon tools if you want i sell legal licenses for winiso and the daemon tools are free the purpose of the license is so you can make an iso file from a CD over 200 Mb other than that you have a cap if your interested i pm me

I got my copy of Virtual CD from a software disk that came with my soltek mb. It had that, partion magic, and a few other very useful utilities. Dont ever have to worry bout trial running out.

actually, you can go one better. you can backup your cd's in case they get scratched, then burn the vcd to a blank disk so that you just insert the disk into the drive, then insert the virtual disk into the virtual drive. Save LOTS of hard drive space. thats if you have the cd's to do it with of course!
