I just added a 512 stick of Apacer CL2 PC2100 to my nForce2 mobo. Now it has 2x256 in one channel and the 512 in the other. I ran 3Dmark2k1 and got 100+ points. I'm pretty happy because I expected no increase and got a full percent improvement.
I only got the stick because in 3D modelling I have scenes that take up 400MB physical ram (to display in the editor) and I want to add to them. Swapping to hdd is obviously crazy-slow. I'm somewhat overjoyed to have a measurable (1%) advantage in 3D mark since I wasn't expecting any. I was also fearful of problems stemming for dual-channel conflicts and it seems to work fine.
