Ok, I finally put my water setup on yesterday and I was getting temps very high, so I decided to put my old heatsink/fan back on until I can get a better waterblock because the one that came with my kit is awful. Well, now, I cant even get the monitor to click on and I get no beeps from my A7N8X. I have my old pally 2000+ in my system now, and my tbred b 2100+ sitting on top of my rig. The chip has no burn marks, the die looks good, I practically drenched the top of the chip in 99% Isprophyl Alchohol and it still wont work in either my A7N8X or my A7V-333. What do you think happened?

Overheated.

:(

Not sure though.

How hot did it get?

Well it got to about 140F 60C
I shut it down through start so I dont think it fried.
No burn marks either.

hmm... try putting the proc in a diff board... it may have gotten wet... never know..

These temps are not the greatest, but mine with 2.0 cv and 61c under load/folding is fine. So I dont see why 60c should have killed it.

All this with the rig in my sig.

When I had my XP1600+ in with the same 2.0 cv the temp was 43c in the same rig go figure.

But like dippy said try it in another mobo.

I've had that happen to me, ended up being i put the Heatsink "reverse" so the "footstep" wasn't at the "Socket A" Side, meaning where the socket a is, there's a lap, usually you can start it off, but you end up just frying the chip. Just throw it away, worthless now.

When I used to have a water cooled setup with a 1200/266 T-bird
one of the plastic socket lips gave out from over tightening the block clamp so my copper block was not making full contact.

After freshly installing the block I turned on the comp and it beep and shut down just as fast. I had set the bios to warn at 55c and shut down at 60.

My point is I did fry the T-bird but not enough to cause any visible sign of distress. No bubbles, crack or burns. The dealer spent 30mins testing it and looking for signs of overheating with a lighted magnifying glass and came to the conclusion that it was a faulty chip. Sent it back to Distributer for an exchange. I pulled a fast one there with a very picky store. hehe.

point is your chip may be fried without looking the part. Which is a good thing :)

did you smell anything funny after the accident? usually when anything is toastd, it gives out an odor. did you try to clean cmos? make sure hsf is making a contact with the chip. good luck

Good excuse to get the new 1700 + processor ! It seems to be doing better than the 2100 anyway !

Unfortently, it's a OEM Processor, and he didn't pay the extra $5.00 For the warranty

Make sure you cleaned that chip good. Make sure that ... no arctic silver is like on the chip (Bridges, resistors).

sucks man, sounds like you killed it...hope you can get something new to keep you occupied though. good luck

Had a problem like that. Ended up that the shim I was using wasn't letting the HSF touch the die. ditched the shim and no problems. I'd say reinstal the HSF very carefully and try again.

I had a koolance CPU-200G with a thermocouple, which somehow ended up jutting out and prevented the block from contacting most of the CPU. There were mysterious crashes and I tried reseating the block to no avail. IT would keep on jutting out. Worse a book fell on me and I ended up cracking the core. (This was an AGOGA 1800+ pally) It made a POP! sound and almost killed the mobo. (8KHA+, no thermal protection)

Before I decided to throw the koolance into the dumpster I took the thermocouple out and now it runs perfectly on the AUIGA. Well, ran perfectly. Just recently the pumps failed.

Looks like your thermal protection wasn't working and a part of your chip fused together internally, Bon3thugz43v3r. Does the mobo's MOSFETs get extremely hot when you try to run the chip in it? If so, that is the case.

The CPU is a keychain item. http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/images/smilies/bawling.gif

Speaking of keychains, I'd like to make one. If you wanna sell that for cheap or trade for something PM me. Or if you want to donate it to science, BillA is wanting dead cpu's, he's checking out how flat the dies are with an optical outfit.

edit: If ya wanna do both, I'll buy/trade ya and you can send it to BillA, he'd send it to me when he's done with it.

peace.

My A7N8X has thermal protection because when the temp gets aboove 70C it cuts off immediatley. The only thing I can really say it is now is the die. It must me microscopic because I cant see it under a light with my unlocking kit's magnifyer. The crappy thing is my stepdad is gonna flip when he finds out this is dead. He always has despised overclocking and now hes gonna be all mad. I got like 70 bucks now and I think im gonna grab the 1700+ from excalibur, because they got the 1.5 voltage chips and they almost ALWAYS get to 2.2 or more with 1.7 volts. I was going to use this 70 dollars to get a better waterblock but I guess cpu before waterblock. I also was dissapointed to find out that the rad i got wont even fit in my case. I measured it and everything but it doesnt fit..
