Does he have MBM5 (or another temperature monitoring program) installed? I would HIGHLY recommend that he install one of these programs and watch his temps closely. Without intake and exhaust fans, the temperature inside his computer case is going to rise dramatically. The CPU fan will not do any good if the temperature inside his case is extremely hot.
He will probably have some warning. His computer will start locking up or having BSODs. He will automatically be notified by the computer with these symptoms that he has made a mistake.

I wouldn't really worry about case fans, mainly because I run with no case fans in my system, I just rely on the PSU fan to move out hot air. Seems to work fine because my case temp never passes 35°C. What I would worry about it the stopping of the Radeon 9000 Pro fan. Video cards come with fans for a reason!

maybe since it's a 9000 model and not a super duper 9800 model it might survive but that is really stupid.

Yeah, he's so stupid that the Videocard fan makes barely any noise :D
trust me you need a fan on the 9000pro! I have one and even the heatsink around it gets hot! (pathetic heat sink it is mind you!)

Yes, it has been very hot in florida.
I just added another fan to my system. 2 intake, 1 exhaust (+ PSU), CPU, Vidcard, Northbridge.
I agree.. give him MBM5 and let him know 50C is really as hot as you want it to get for any extended time. He can decide from there.
sounds kind of stupid to turn all of your fans off to me! :p
Daddy will buy him a new one.
nothing wrong with having only the cpu fan running as long as the temps stay down. I have a aluminum case and the only 2 fans that run are the cpu and psu fan. I taken the fan off the MSI TI4400 and put a good HS on but I dont OC it like mad just 300/600. My system is very silent the psu fan is only 2200rpm and cpu is 2500rpm and i got a quiet drive maxtor so now i can finally hear my typing ;) I'd rather have it this way then a 8k rpm tornado and 6 case fans. im not looking to break any bench records or anything so this system works for me.

crank an egg right on top of the radeon. If the sizzling sound don't convince him, i don't know what will :-P
this might be a little(ok a lot) off subject but when it started getting down into the 60s at night down in florida did they really start handing out jackets to homeless people?
what are you talking about pip?
I've heard a story a couple hundred times that when it got down into the 60s at night in florida they started handing out jackets to homeless people, and i want to know if it's true
heh, that pretty funny, i doubt it's true though. and it was only a little off subject pip, but thanks for the laugh

tell him to put the fans back on, things will start to not work so right. my sys is loud, but it doesnt really bother me, cause have great temps.;)

Sounds like Darwinism in action. If he won't listen to reason, he needs to learn an expensive lesson, I think.
Maybe point out that his box (he OBVIOUSLY did not build it himself) wouldn't have come with all those fans if they weren't needed.
His system will last. As long as the CPU cooler is adequate and he is running at stock speeds/voltages it should be OK. I have doubts about the radeon but I remember quite a few people that had their fans fail only to find out months later. The card will get very hot, but still function normally. Not good for the long term though.
And a GeForce 3 or 4 would burn up and melt without any fan action.
If he really wants effective passive VGA cooling, tell him to get the Zalman ZM50-HP.

relax man!
i'm not having any fans in my chasis - not mentioning power fan.
i don't think that he will fry his rig. and gpu fan may be horrible noisy (like mine old riva2m64 did...). only thing that may be interesting is why he turned it off? well, someone don't like their videocards
it'll work fine, i propose overclocking a bit for more silence :PpPPPpppp
actually without oc everything should work ok with the cpu fan and the 9700 fan on... especially if his case is open. check temperatures

To continue the thread hijack :D
Here in Houston, they started issuing space heaters to people under a certain income level a few years back when the lows were in the 30s and the daytime highs in the 50s. Pretty funny stuff.

i bet his cpu fan makes more noise than the video card fan, there's a useless gesture if i ever saw one, there are pretty silent fans out there, i suggest some enermax temperature variable fans - under 30 dba unless it's hot like 60-85 CELSIUS - at least use one for exhaust
