For this Poll to work I have allowed users to make Multiple Choices.
Please vote ONCE for LOAD and ONCE for IDLE temperatures, to achieve this simply select two options at once else you will not be able to re-vote.
If you also wish to post your Overclock in Mhz then please do.
This Poll is here for your benefit, DO NOT ABUSE IT!
Else it will be permanently removed.
Credit goes to ZHU for the idea.

idle?? whats idle? hmmm... must be something you made up for this poll. Good idea though.

true... i really don't know how cool my computer runs when its idle.. but usually on full load, i'm at 28-9°C :D
u know, learning the alt+0176 helps - try it out sometime... press alt- type 0176 on the num keypad, release alt.. to get the ° symbol :)

Uhh, is there any way to modify it so we can only choose two choices total and only one choice out of two categories? I just checked four squares and it accepted it...

No, hence why I am relying on people not abusing this.
Alt 0176 does produce °, but it only seems to work on the Numerical Keypad.
Remember, its gone if you abuse it.

mine is 29°C at idle and 35°C to 39°C at full load, depending on ambient (WOOHOO i got it! thanks nick!)

At least here at work the alt+0176 doesn't work for me either. I hold down the alt then as I press 0 then 1 then 7 then 6 I get an error alarm bell for each one. I'll try it when I get to the house, it may not work here because it's an old lap top with a sorry OS (NT)

32C idle
43C full load with toast for 1 hour

1) I own 5 computers.
2) They are in the garage. On my main rig, load temp is between 24C and 48C, depending on the air temp.
What is this idle temp of which you speak? Please explain what is meant by this "idle".

Do you guys know by how much the Abit IT7-Max2 ver2 overeads temps. I have heard that they over-read by as much as 10c.
I am using as3 and Volcano 7+..
Idle is about 42-43 and Prime95 brings it up to about 54-57 depending on room temp etc...
Now if they were actually running 5-10c lower then I am ok.
I use winbond hardware monitor to monitor temps...:(

I would think "idle" would be when your computer is "idle"(funny that) ie: sitting there not processing - 0% load

Please note the CPU's in my signature which run the distributed computing client folding@home. In other words my remark was meant to be sarcastic. I haven't seen an idle temperature in months. Why would anyone throw away their cycles?

I am unhappy with the temps I have but I have no AC still. 31-40 idle and 41-50 loaded. I ordered a portable but it may take up to 6-8 weeks to be delivered :( I'll have AC by then but I think I hook it up to the PC anyway.

Alrighty. finally figured out the degree sign. You *have* to do the 0176 in the numerical key pad *with* the Number Lock on. Then it works. I'm sure that all this waas very clear to everyone but me from the beginning, but I am usually real slow when I'm not being really dense.
My computer is currently 71C load. This should be going down in the near future, as I'll be replacing the stock AMD heatsink with an SLK-800U on Tuesday.

If it's not too hard, could you add ambient (room) temperature to the poll please? It helps people like me who worry about how many degrees C above ambient their CPU is. Thanks!

I may create a seperate post for Ambient Room temperatures but I don't see much point at this moment in time.
Post them here if you wish.

Stats and OC info are in Sig.
Though for those of you wondering why the Proc seems to be cooler than ambient (yes its correct) its because the air in the case itself is warmer than ambient and therefore the proc is at ambient and the case/mobo is above that..reason for this is as follows.
The mobo temp sensor is near the PSU (which is almost the hottest thing in my case) and the case sensor is over near my HDD/CD drives and PSU (so they register higher. obviously)
Also note that what I refer to as 'ambient' is what my thermostat which is located around the corner from my computer reads.
Also, it is aircooled, but I dont know the dBa yet since havent borrowed sensor from friend (but it is helluva loud :) ) louder than the Dual Xeon server sitting next to me

my idle/ load temps are mid30's / 40-42
they dropped about 7C when I discovered it was overvolted and i lowered the voltage
Update: I've installed the new heatsink, and the temps are 16C lower, even before the Arctic Silver has had time to set. Furthermore, since I'm using a Vantec Stealth as the heatsink fan, the computer is much quieter.

The intentions are in the right place, but this poll is meaningless without ambient temp data. 42C is a great load temp if your case or room temp is 25-30C, but it's terrible if your ambient temp is 15-20C.
A better poll would be: load: ambient + 0C to ambient + 5C ..
ambient + 5C to ambient + 10C,
and so forth.
This is why heatsinks are rated in C/W. So that given your case temp and heat load, you can estimate out what the temp will be. Just a small point. Nice idea! :) -- Paul

Dually 40C & 43C with ambient around 21C (for the room, which my rigs keep nice and warm in the winter) when under load. I have no clue about about idle since all my rigs fold so there is no such thing in my network:D

I was orginally thinking along those lines but due to limitations in the Poll I decided to go with the way it is.
(IYou can post your Ambient temperatures here as well.)
Its not really meant to be an accurate Poll but mearly a look at what people are running temperature wise.
I may well post a new Poll including degrees above ambient, as this will provide an interesting look at temperatures. However its still not that accurate and people monitor temperatures with different Accuracy (Diodes etc).
I could add another two options along the lines of Diode, or Thermistor but whether this will be any use is another question, as you wouldn't know what temperature related where. Although it could give a clear average.
Another idea is to post a c/w rating, you could work out the c/w with the Formula and this would be even more accurate, for instance if your c/w is 0.20/.025 you could select that option...
So far I'm very impressed with the Positive Feedback in this Thread, so much so I may well post one of the latter.
Before I do though it may be a good idea to post some suggestions. I'd appreciate them via PM as not to clog up this Thread. :)
Thanks all!

M_N, those are some really good points. (And BTW, I really want you to know that I wasn't trying to be critical -- I think this poll is a wonderful idea and is a lot of fun! :)) And you're certainly right -- measurement techniques are always a little questionable, so to some extent, there's no sense in sweating it so much. ;)
A C/W poll could be very informative and educational to the participants. Fun idea!
And once again, I think this is a really fun poll! And I participated, too. For the record, about 45 or 46C load, maybe 42 or 43C idle, case temps usually in the 33C-35C range.
Thanks again, and keep up the good work! -- Paul

Idle 30°C, load 36°C, amb 21°C
This is on a water cooled, non oc'd PIV 2.66
OC'ing to 3.0 (150 fsb, stock voltage) brought my load temps up to about 40°C. This was after about 12 hrs of Prime 95. Unfortunately it was not a completely stable oc so I went back to stock fsb. I am going to try again and raise the voltage, so I guess that my load temps will be going up. This is a great poll, if used to get a general feel for CPU temps, but I don't see any way to make it truly accurate, just too many variables.

My CPU with the Vantek VA4-C7040 with 70mm YSTech TMD fan runs 16c over ambient fully loaded and 13c idle. I average 45c-50c depending on the inside temps. I'm only running stock voltage on all components. 1.5v for the CPU in rig 2. I suspect the 'Hardware Doctor diode readings are 10c too high as it's no where near 35c in my house or I'd be sweating buckets right now.
I think a relap and new AS ceramic thermal compound is in order.
My comp runs at about 45°C while Folding, and I do so 24/7 so I am not even sure what idle temps are anymore...
I suppose that if I added a higher CFM fan to my AX-7 that I might get a bit better temps, but my ears are happier this way and mid-40's ain't so bad in my book...

after 45 minutes, the box idles @ 41C. if its under an extremely heavy load, it can go as high as 46C, but usually maxes at 45C.
after a thorough (sp?) cleaning, fan re-lubrication, and fan re-positioning, i'm idling at 37C and maxing around 41C. that's a big difference:eek: oddly enough, my mobo seems to be getting more power, too, and that ain't bad.

I dont remember the last time I ran my computer at idle
there is no idle only folding!
idle is when u are not folding, like if u have just turned it on and nothing is going on. what is the temperature at that point? by the way, this should be stickied, newbies might find it helpful to see other temps to see if theres are ok.

w00t, my first post :D
My idle temp is reading 42 on my cpu,
47 when under load,
and 52 when using Toast.
Running XP2400+ with a slighty modded case.
80mm side case fan sucking air in.
80mm on the bottom blowing up.
Coolermaster HSF that came with my cpu.
Exhaust fan under my gfx card (Radeon 9000 pro)
Exhaust fan (came with case) opposite my cpu, taking the air blown off the cpu out the case.
Dual fan PSU exhausting any remaining hot air at the top of case.
I'm quite content with the set-up, not overclocking or anything as yet (still n00b) but hopefully with the help of this site, that can all change. ;)
I want to get a new HSF (mebbe Volcano 9) and use some of my brother's AS3 (currently using the retail, urgh, thermal strip)

While giving it the smoke test last night (just put it together)
I was looking at 328 Kelvin (too lazy to type out 55 degrees) in the bios on the cpu. This is with both side panels off of the case and the only fans on the system being the one on the north bridge and the volcano on the cpu heatsink. Abient temp was around 80 degrees F if i recall.

0 Kevin = -273 Degree Celcius.... Same scale otherwise. Just shifted. Bonux is, kelvin doesn't have degree after the number. it's just 328 Kelvin.
What's farenhiet.... C = 5/9 * (F-32) I think?

Odd, i installed and ran MBM5 on the box (exact same setup)
System and PWM temps seemed to match at 36 and 41 degrees C. That' fine. I guessed with probes until i found the CPU reading. Got it where it matched the bios for a few seconds (mid 50's) and then it dropped to 36 degrees C almot right away. It would climb to 39 degrees but that's it.
Honestly, 39 seeems slightly more reaonable then 56, but I'm not quite sure what to believe on this. Again, no case fans, just the heatsink on the nb and the cpu and the PSU fans (one sucking above cpu, one blowing out the box)
Any thought?

No seriously i confirmed the temperatures using bios and every program i can think of.
Right now its noon, its about 21 celcius in my room...the idle temp on my p4 3ghz is 19 celcius....when booting into windows its 25 celcius
My p4 is very strange. When doing nothing it would THROTTLE down like hell to low temperatues...like after playing a game, it would throttle from 32 celcius to 19 celcius in 30 seconds..and my cpu speed is still 3ghz ht enabled
iam using stock cooling too
Your mobo temerature prob / your termometre sux, probably both.

listen heatsink guy at 3ghz 19°c is not possible with air cooling.... even with water cooling it would be hard. Do you have any idea how much power that is? I have a Swiftech MCX-462 on my 2.4A OC'd to 3.0ghz and it runs at 51° idle. To think that stock cooling will produce those temps. is absurd. Even if your room is 20°C.

Hey Heatsinkguy, shouldn't your system temps be lower with your frigid ambient temps and the seven Tt fans?

11-10-03, 06:10 PM
I have been bustin my *** for months on this water cooling system. I am still only able to get 25*c idle ( ambiant 73*f ). I know when I got my board the BIOS was off by 12*c. Since I have lowered my temps it is still off by 5*c.
The reason a BIOS can be wrong is because it has to convert a sensors reading to a display ( 21*c ). If the BIOS wasnt calibrated right, it could put up any number. It all depends on how much time ( I should say money ) a MB manufacture spends on perfecting thier BIOS. Plus, if the CPU seems to run cool on thier MB then more people will buy them.
One of the first things I recomend people to do, is get a good, trustable temp sensor ( its better safe then sorry ). Get it as close to the CPU as possible ( with out messing up the contact area ). If the new sensor still says its that cold, then it might be.
I also find 19c on a stock heatsink unlikely. ( unless your ambiant temp is 19*c ) Most P4s are somewere around 40 to 50c stock.

KonaMonkey: Thank you. I wish I had never put the IHS back on. Too late now though. I really doubt it would come back off without breaking something.
I forgot to say, software doesnt count either. It uses the BIOS temps. So, if the BIOS is wrong, the program will also be wrong.
Edit: I stole a good link (http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=64953) from IMOG. ( thanks, good read )

Sorry. Im just venting. I could have possible picked the hottest spot on the P4 to place my sensor. Its very possible. Im just saying my temp sensor is showing temps hotter than the BIOS shows.
I was wrong to some point. My BIOS is still off by 9*c. I just needed to let it warm up some. ( 21c when my sensor says 30c )

:( is right. When I had my 1800 Palomino, my cpu fan quit on me during gameplay and after thirty minutes or so my cpu temp only got up to 65°C. The side panel fan kept it from melting thank goodness.:D

When P4 hits the 65 degress mark, it will Throttle itself down by more than 50%..You will noticed the difference while playing a game etc. There is no way a P4 will cook itself :)
And if it hits the 70 degree mark(not sure) it will send a signal to shut itself down.
slk800(u)ttsmartfan on auto: 36 idle 41 cpu intense. I believe the stress temp would be lower if fan was manual not auto.

Hailrazor, did you lap that sp-97? And what site did u get it? I'm getting a SP-97 in two weeks and those are crazy low temps. Hell my case temp is 29c with it OPEN, though I have no casefans. And room temp is only around 10c.
Is a closed case with good airflow better than an open case with no casefans?

I am currently running a Intel Celeron 700 (Coppermine Core), Overclocked to 1.05GHz. I am using Stock Intel HSF, and I get ~71F Idle. Running F@H, I get a Consistant Load temp of 104F. I have 1 Exhast @ ~2500RPM, and on Intake that does nothing for the case.

If I remember correctly the formulas go as follows:
(C) x 9/5 + 32 = farenheiht
(F) - 32 x 5/9 = celcius
Example: 40c x 9/5 + 32 = 104f
Example: 104F - 32 x 5/9 = 40c
Idle 34°C
load 41°C
amb 21°C
On air not o/c'ed

No,I did not lap the heatsink, used arctic silver 5 thermal paste.I purchased the sp-97 heatsink from bigfoot computers in canada.
I have 4 case fans, 2 intake and 2 exhaust, and a delta 80 mm 68cfm fan on the heatsink.I've opened the case a few times to see if there was any difference in temps, but it remained the same,my temps before sp-97 were
cpu:42c idle,52c load
case:22c idle,26c load.
20c constant room temp.
Geez 10c room temp, are you outside or something, thats cold!

My god that must be incredibly loud. Do you have the CPU in a different room?
its 62dba!!! thats how I got my name! yeh, its loud, but i dont notice it - its just background noise. 28°c load after folding for 12 hours is very impressive cooling tho...

i have only one tornado cooling my slk-800a, but that's already too loud, not for me, it's too loud for my dad:( he keeps complaining since day one i installed the fan. :argue: so i had to rewired the fan so that it's only taking 5v instead of 12v. now my cpu temp has gone up 6C when loaded:bang head
