hi there just built my new pc and start up and installed windows now my machine does not recognise my cd writer (acting as cd rom ) only 1 drive... primary master in bios is hard drive (jumpers correct) secondry master is cd writer (jumpers correct)its all there in the bios when i start windows and go into my comput6er its not showing up i cant get my drivers to load for graphics etc mobo asus a7v266 athlon 1400 t bird win 98 any ideas please it may be something i over looked ......thanxxssssssss
It sounds like you don't have "mscdex" installed wich is the program to run a cdrom in dos but is used in windows also. Try rebooting? See if you can acces your cdrom in dos. Last resort use your Windows startup disk to boot your computer and it will install mscdex, then go to c:\win and start windows then you should be able to install your cdrom drivers and finish the rest up

Try putting the CD/RW as the primary slave. If all your board's drivers aren't installed yet, it might not be recognizing the second IDE channel.
It is possible that Win98 needs drivers for the cd writer. Possibly new ASPI32 drivers. See if the maker of your CD drive has a web site that you can download drivers from. Getting new ASPI32 drivers might just be all you need to do.

Make sure also that you are using the correct ribbon cable. Funny to mention, but the wrong cable can cause strange issues to occur.

What drivers? You don't need to see your cd-rom to install drivers that you just downloaded off the internet. Usually you can just run the setup, have it install drivers, then reboot and it should see the drive.
Did you find the ASPI32 drivers and install them?
Ifyou don't get the miniport driver loaded you can kiss goodbye any speed on your hard drive, am fighting that issue right now. I've got a floppy disk that came with my cd burner installs the dos drivers for cdrom on just about anything. It doesn't have any copyright statements or licensing issues that I can find and only uses stuf thats available anywhere, but I don't know how the moderators feel about this type of prgram. File length is 1.4MB.
Try downloading the updated Hyperion Via drivers. Perhaps the drivers you got from Asus are buggy.
