View Full Version : 2 hrs + no pump = farewell XP1600+ (pics)
I guess I'm the only one who finds it funny. I install a new DVD drive, forgetting to plug back in the pump, and fire it up thinking "wow that old one was LOUD!! It's so quiet now!!". Yep. And then I play some NFS:PU for 15 or 20 minutes, and leave it downloading while I take an hour & a half bike ride (such a beautiful day). So I walk back up here saying *sniff* *sniff*, what IS that smell?
It got SO HOT that it blew the tygon off my TC4, and melted a great deal of it on to the barbs too. I'm also missing about a square inch of the tubing, which I just dont even want to know what happened to. I don't know when it finally died, but when I got home it was so hot that I dribbled a bit of water on it and it boiled away (after turning it off, of course). My thermometer only goes up to 70c (which the block was, after being turned off for 10 min).
It wasn't OC'd (getting too warm for my home brewed rad here), and my GF4 was also on water (thank GOD it's ok). The darn chip wasn't two weeks old, and it was an AGOIA

And what I came home to:

Just grand, ey?

My condolences! Don't you have a temp shut down feature in the bios? All the boards (recently anyway) I have used have an option to shut the rig down if the CPU breeches a certain temp... Sorry about the losses...

Axle, today you have sufferd a great deal, tommorrow will rebuild for the better of us all. lol
that sucks
thanks for the pics!!!!!! I love to see destruction! BTW sorry about the misfortunes
Amazing carnage indeed. I must admit that I would not have expected to see such extremes with a properly filled block on the cpu and the radiator fan running (i assume it was at least)... I guess the CPU's inferno capability is no match for any passive water cooling after all.
Too bad about losing that stuff by the way. I take it the mainboard is toasted too?
//edit:// Hey what is the deal with the northbridge? Did the tubes fall off there too?
Ney, I just run the NB dry. KT266+ doesn't really need active cooling, but once upon a time I thought it did.
And no, everything but the proc is fine. I polished up the TC4, clipped in the AXIA 1.2 I'd been running for a few years, and everything's groovy.
I'd like to thank Gainward again for making an unbreakable card. There was so much water everywhere by the time I put the new proc in, you wouldn't believe it. The card ran fine for an hour or so, and then it just froze and refused to boot. Good old fashioned CD & tissue in the AGP slot, and everything's back on track. It's really the only thing I'm worried about, I paid $40 shipped of the agioa, and while that's a chunk of change, it's not breaking the bank.
I really don't know what happened. Shuttle (what a FINE mobo, btw  ) doesn't seem to think that it ever got to 65c.
did you have a shutdown temp?

I once had a shuttle AK31 fail to recognize that 80C>65C. I just happened to look down at MBM and noticed 80C and quickly powered down. when I rebooted, I checked bios, and sure enough, I had told it to power down at 65C. Oh well, I survived it OK. Sorry that you didn't.

can we get a pic of the chip?
Sure :) (http://users.rcn.com/deuson.1/WaterCooling/IMG_1089.jpg)
I was just trying out my latest idea: direct die air cooling. Worked fantastic!! Chip didn't even get warm-- ditch those fancy HSs people!!

OMG, sorry for your loss. Did you motherboard survive, or is that toast too. Best of luck to you rebuilding
**Places label next to power button that reads "Don't forget to plug pump back in"**
[EDIT]Opps, guess I should have read the thread more carefully, good to see the only thing you lost was your CPU.

water cooling + mbm5(shutdown) = no fried CPUs

toasted tubes
That's too bad dude. Lucky you didn't lose a lot more than a chip.

damn dude, that sucks..
i remember when i did that with my old P4 1.3ghz.
It got kinda warm, but never over 50c though.
Look on the bright side, u can get a tbred 1700+ instead :))

Man does that ever suck.
And I can tell you that I know EXACTLY how you feel- except I froze my radiator when I killed mine......
and I took out my mobo too :(
(running 1400@1980 at almost 2.1volts)
RIP in piece agoia: your life was short but sweet;)
Wow, that's amazing.. I feel for you..
I'm sorry, bud.. I once forgot to plug back in a pump, but heard the alarm go off and just quickly shut the powerstrip off. And it was fine.. Yeah, we do remember those things..
Glad it's only a chip, too.

Dang, looks like you could have made soup in there.
If the tubes were burned that badly, you're really lucky they didnt sprink a leak and drip all over your vid card
sorry to hear
ive never burned my chip but..when it burns up, does it just burn? like wont it keep burning if the system is on, or does it turn off once its burned?
just posting a tip for you (incase you forget to turn on the pump again :) ) and others
mbm5 can shut down your comp when the high temp alarm goes off...not mbm5 itself cuz u have to dl something called SHUTDOWN NOW! (it does have the !) once u install that go into the mbm5 settings> temps > then choose whatever sensor that u want to have the alarm to go off on, it should be the on die sensor...then go to the alarm settings> make "high temprature alarm using " to fixed value> then set whatever temp (mine is @ 55°C)> scroll down until u see "when alarm goes off shut start SHDN", check the box (you can only check the box if u have shdn installed) >then on the "start SDHN w/switch" option choose shutdown
and make the SDHN delay like 2 seconds (it cant go lower )
so you get double protection with this..and a mobo with hi temp shutdown :)
There's a reason I never unplug the pumps. I'm too scatter brained (ADHD), I'd probably burn something.
And Abit boards have those nice shutdown features. And so does Intel.
Knock on (steve looks around sees no wood) OK , my head, I haven't lost one yet.

no cpu temp safety to shut down the system? My asus came with it.
mmm toasty!
sorry about the loss though.. hows this direct die aircooling work?... just stick a 120mm fan on top of your cpu?

Sorry to hear that Axle. The smell is horrible in deed, and it doesn't go away for a while either.

in bios what was your lowest temp u were allowed to select for shutdown...mine was 70°C. i feel if my alarm is that high, it could still be burned up..i have a tbred. and i dont want to test it if itl shut down :)

I'm so sorry about that man. Maybe go with intel because they downclock when they overheat

Sorry to hear about yur loss. I find it funny as well. Not your misfortune, just the actual meltdown and the way you described it :D
Well, thanks y'all, but it really isn't a big deal :D I mean I'm out 40 big ones, but I've still got an operateing computer. Things just aren't as snappy now :(
You know I was thinking. For the 5+ months I've been watercooling, I've plugged the pump in (lets see, 5*30=) 150 for 150 times. Just once was all it took :D
And Roger: I've done this as well!! RIP Dury 850 & K7VAT. 100% anitfreeze froze SOLID, which I didn't really notice. Pumps really don't pump solids around too well either.
Cheers :)

Almost makes me wonder if putting in a relay to not have the PC be able to power up without pump power would be worth it

Yeah, but he would need a new processor, new motherboard and (maybe...) new ram if he were to go intel now, whereas, it's simpler and cheaper to just buy another AMD chip to go with his socket A board and waterblock.

After seeing a few stories like these. I think I just might put in the relay.

Sorry for your loss :( I had a close call once when I unplugged my pump from the relay to get out some bubbles and forgot to plug it back into the relay. Luckily I remembered and unplugged my comp quickstyle.
Well, supposedly the Athlon64 will come out in 3Q and you can pick up a 2400+ or 3000+ for a reasonable price ;)

I never unplug my pump. Its right there, with a bigass label on the plug saying "UNPLUG = DEATH" and i've only unplugged it once since i started leak-testing the block - put the block on the CPU, board in machine etc all while it was on

soo really id like to see this direct death aircooling i mean uhh direct die aircooling.... i think you would kill another cpu if you some how mounted a fan onto a cpu because the cpu would fry before the fan even spun up
