View Full Version : Airflow question o.o
I drew a picture of the airflow inside my case =]
it's a side view o.o
http://www3.sympatico.ca/junzhu/airflow.JPG
Giving me pretty bad results right now =[ I duno whut i should do =[
No front panel intake and i don't think i wana cut up my case to put one in
That leaves only 1 intake which is on the side panel, and 3 spots for exhaust
So i put an intake on one of the rear exhaust spots
I don't like how things are turning out =[
Does any1 have any suggestions on the setup i should use for my fans?
Thanks

I'm not an expert but having an exhaust above an intake is just wrong. I mean the intake fan is blowing air inside the case, but this air also comes from the air being blowing out. That means warm air is always going back inside the case. Unless the duct is redirected to somewhere so it'll get "cold" air.
Are you sure that your case doesn't have a spot for a 80mm fan in front? There should be atleast one in the hdd bays. Maybe another blowhole in the side panel with one more 80mm fan would help. Or just cut it a bit more and put a 120mm fan, so you can have more airflow and less noise than you would have with 2x80mm fans.

You have whats called an "airflow short circuit" going on. The air coming in the rear intake fan is immediately being sucked out the rear exhaust fan, thus providing no benefits. Switch both rear fans to intake, and make a little cardboard duct or something on the PSU exhaust so it blows upwards. That should help.

what are your temps etc? also what is the rated CFM of the fans?

yea what youve done is just making air go in and then right out leaving all the air deep in the case just sitting thier. heres what to do, BUY A NEW CASE! http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=7&manufactory=1502&DEPA=1&sortby=14&order=1
those will give you great airflow provided you have semi-neat wiring and have 2 intake in the front 2 outtake in back.
Ok.. just made boty back fans intake and directed PSU exhuast up...
Doesn't help much =[
The hot air is just staying inside.. one exhaust fan does not pump out fast enough =[
and a new case is out of the question unfortunately... if i had the extra money i would get rid of my gf4 mx =]

Erhm dude... you have an 80mm blowhole in the side panel... just cut it a bit more to fit an 120mm fan rated at 80-90CFM. Then take that duct off and put another 80mm fan so you'll have 2 exhaust in the rear.
Try it out shouldn't hurt. :)

Both of the fans in the back of the case, and the one on the top should be blowing out of your case. The fan on the side should be blowing in, and there should be a place for a fan in the front bottom. Even if you can't mount a fan there, there should be a way for air to get in there.
Add up the CFM of the air the fans are blowing in, and the amount being blown out. The amount blowing out should be more than or equal to the amount blowing in.
Both of the fans in the back of the case, and the one on the top should be blowing out of your case.
The exhaust cfm will be too much higher than the intake cfm then =[
And also there is a spot for the front fan on the bottom, but is is INCREDIBALLY poorly designed.. it is completely covered up by the bezel and no air can get in... I tried putting a fan in there and i can hardly feel any air =[ On top of that, putting a fan there craetes a LOT of noise =[
just cut it a bit more to fit an 120mm fan rated at 80-90CFM.
can't really do taht o.o it's kinda a window with a design on it =[
well you can find a picture of the case here: http://www.maxpoint.com/pc_cases/pccases_cs-305.htm

I got good news and bad news for ya. I have that case, but there are a few diff things: it didn't come with the on top blowhole, but came with 4 80mm fans slots in the front.
If you have exactly the same case that is shown in that link, then you have a 80-120mm fan slot in the front.

My case also had the same design flaw, this is how i fixed it. First I noticed that at the very bottom of my case front is a opening but sence when it put on the floor its covered it was kinda useless. So I put 4 plastic bottle caps under the feet of my case, they just fit over the feet on my case lifting it about 1/4 of a inch of the floor, gave me a bit more air. Next i took my drill and punched a few small holes down the side of my bezel, bit more air. This part may not be the same on your case, but here it is anyways. My case has a Acrylic piece that is bolted on (case company did that part right) made 2 decretive cut outs in the Bezel and replaced the Acrylic cover with tiny washers under the bolts, letting air sneak around it while not making it look much higher then before, and added led fans so now they shine out the front :). Hope something in there helped ya.

trust me golf balls are the best for razing the case as long as your on carpet (make sure they are top flight ;))
I took a look, the hole on the bottom is far to small for much air to get in.. also it is stuffed up by wires =[
Also, couldn't you have just cut thru the acrylic too on the bezel?
I don't know about cutting up the front, but the holes on the side sound interesting =]

im not sure about your case but on mine if you take out the front part that holds in the Drives there is a small hole thingy that is slightly bigger than 80mm. its blocked big time but nothing a dremel couldnt fix!

Here snaped a cuple of picts for ya. And nothing beats the power of Dremel. If you dont have one there cheep got mine for $20 at walmart. One of the best computer investments I've made. Someday I'll finish that cutting job and turn the front holes into moons. Whish goes to show there is nothing wrong with hacking up the front of a case.

Wow.. it looks pretty good =]
I happened to have gone to walmart in search for a dremel about a week ago o.o
found none =[
All the rotary tools there are over $100 =[

You may want to give Sears a shot then. Wish I would rember them more and more when I'm tool shoping. And just did a quick seach this is what I pulled up for ya.

I have no idea about the vender, but gives ya a idea about some rotary tools out there and the prices.

Take out the duct and make two rear exhausts. Keep the top one blowing out and keep the side one blowing in. There is no need to have excess air blowing around in your case.
Cheap case that comes w/2x92mm fans (reverse the sidepanel fan so it's an intake): http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?description=11-150-017&refer=pricewatch . Just add 3x80mm fans (2 upper rear exhaust and 1 lower front intake) and while you have negative airpressure you will get very decent cooling and intake from the side ventilation holes. If you Dremel the 80mm fan spots open and use standard fan grills you'll get even better airflow.
