View Full Version : Volcano 7+ v.s. Vantec Aeroflow???
Which one cools better? Which one is better overall?
Um, the Vantec and um..., the Vantec.
The Aeroflow is quieter, makes better temps, and is not junk. Other than being really cheap, offering some spec sheet goodness, and employing a deathly loud fan there is nothing remarkable about the V7+. Many people use the 7+ (the cheapest is usually the most popular, and most don't look too hard to find the weaknesses of their purchase), but controlled testing against true high quality opposition reveals both the crude materials and construction as well as the brutal noise characteristics. Units such as the Thermalright SLK800, SLK900, or AX7 along with other quality alternatives like the Alpha or Swiftech units are infinitely preferable, although a touch dearer. The Aeroflow is competitive with these units (meaning it is better than the V7+ once fan noise is normalized) and doesn't cost a mint either. An altogether easy choice, more so if you have personally tested the 7+ against the full range of alternatives.

No experience with the Volcano but I have 2 of the Vantecs and they are great.

I'd say the Aeroflow as well. I just went from a Volcano 9 to a Vantec Aeroflow, and the Aeroflow is much better (even with the V9 at highest speed) and much quieter.
I know that the Volcano 7+ is better than the Volcano 9, but it's just as noisy when the fan is cracked up.
Cool, I was thinking the Vantec Aeroflow too. It's just that the other day I was looking around in Fry's and noticed that they sell the Volcano 7+ for 39.99 and the Aeroflow for 29.99 so I started to wonder why... I find it kind of funny how they label the fan controller switch on the Volcano High, Low, and "MEDIAN"... :D
But yea I'm going with the Aeroflow, looks better too IMO...

The Aeroflow is a slick looking unit. Fan spins at 5800 rpm and is very quiet indeed.

My vote is for the Vantec too. Have you read the Overclockers home grown review of the unit?

Frankly, I don't know why the Aeroflow isn't much more popular than it is. I picked mine up for $37 CAD, nothing in that price range can come close to this thing in terms of noise and performance.
Not only that, but any HSF will have a tough time beating thing thing at the same noise level, even the SLK800.

Captain Hilts: Where did you get it for $37 CAD ? very good deal.

My vote goes to the Vantec...The V9 at 3500rpm was too loud, and not as cool...(Wish i could get my $50CD back...)

I got mine from ShopRBC, it's a local store but I they do ship. The web address is www.shoprbc.com
My vote goes to the Volcano...

No Problem. Yeah $37 CAD is a really good price, especially considering that newegg sells them for $33 US.

Sheesh, I guess noise level is very relative...I feel that my Aeroflow is too loud. Then again, when the only other fans are two 120mm Stealths and an Antec PSU, that Aeroflow is gonna stand out, eh? Hopefully I can save up enough dough to revamp my system with H20, new mobo and Barton, and a GeForce FX 5600 256mb version.

all this talk about the aeroflow ! i looked at the one you guys linked, and its alot diffirent from the one i want (here) (http://www4.tomshardware.com/business/20030319/cebit2003_final-05.html) has anyone tried this one ? LMAO i thought it was a Vantec ! DUHH its actually a cooler master ! anyhow.. has any have any input on this unit>? :D

you guys really think the(alluminum) Vantec would out perform the V7+ (copper) unit ! hmm

I still think it would...After running an Aeroflow, i would not downgrade by going to a V7, maybe i'd upgrade to an SLK800, or would it be much of an upgrade? Hmmmmm

I got my Vantec Aeroflow on ebay, Buy It Now for $30 shipped. :) I think you can still find them even.

i think i might have gotten mine from the same place
it's moderately loud compared to the fan on my current rig...but then again, the fan on that wasn't exactly meant to cool athlon xp's...(it came with my 366 celeron)

now the real question........
aeroflow or slk800with 80mm tornado, or slk900 with a 92mm tornado?
(or some other fan that moves alot of air....like the thermaltake smartfan)

Ugh they're all too loud, unless you plan on 7V the tornados. Just for ****s and giggles, I unplugged my Aeroflow for 10 seconds while my machine was running. That TMD fan is definitely by far the loudest part in my box. I put together another box which has 12 fans (!!!!! 4 in the powersupply, 5 80mm case, a 120mm side, and a YS-Tech 66cfm 92mm on a MCX400), and all of them combined are quieter than the Aeroflow.
I am telling you that Aeroflow is by no mean quiet to my level. But people have different ears, so what can I say ? It is bearable when you slow it down to ~4000pm. Like I said, bearable, not quiet.
If you look at the overclockers review the vantec aeroflow got you will see that it is about as good as the slk-900 the only difference is that the vantec runs at 38 dB while the slk runs loud as hell at 55 dB. so I would have to say that the vantec is EASILY the best in terms of the power/noise ratio.
that zalman that kslim has is also very good I would say probably a little better than the vantec but it looks like a pain in the ass to install with that rheostat in the way as well. kslim how was it to install vs a vantec if you have installed one before?

It is not a little better... It is a day and night difference, otherwise I wouldnt have RMAed aeroflow with shipping and restocking fee loss.
Installation was actually harder than expected mostly because I did not want to take out the motherboard from the case. Also Zalman uses 2 screws to fix the hs to the bracket, which is bad and good. It makes it hard to install, unless you take out the motherboard from the case, but the good thing is you can make it a good contact between hs and chip.
There is a little catchy though. Kind of hard to explain, but if you dont bend the bracket that mounts the fan, hsf would not make good contact with chip even if you tighten the screw all the way. So you have to bend the bracket. lostcircuit.com has cu7000 review with the instrucation/picture to bend the bracket, not a big deal though.
Believe or not, it took me like an hour to install the heatsink. I am kind of clumsy at tightening screws in a small space.
cool. i will look more into it. where did you get yours and for how much?

I like my Volcano 7+.
Some people's cases are louder than others, mine seems to muffle the V7 pretty well.

That's a good point that's often overlooked. Some cases do a much better job at keeping the sound in that others.
As for the Aeroflow, I think mine isn't silient at all, but still reasonably quiet. In order to compare it to something, I would say that it it about as loud as the SmartfanII at around 3500RPM. Maybe some of the TMD fans are just defective or something and is why some people think that it is really loud.

Just wondering, Will HSU affect the overclock speed? Example: Vantec Aeroflow 1700@2.4g and Slk-800 1700@2.5g ?

Depends on the chip you have, and your target speed. If you have reached sort of maximum of your chip's speed, which vary chip by chip even from a same wafer, then no better hsf would help, to the first order.
On the other hand, If your chip still have sufficient margin to go up, a better cooling solution could help. Please note that I said cooling solution, which includes hsf, exhaust, etc. Also even if you do have some margin to run faster, noise comes to play. So roughly speaking,
1. You gotta have a good chip.
2. You gotta cool it enough to run your target speed.
3. The overall noise produced should not exceed your maximum tolerance.
4. Everything must cost within your budget.
In achieving this, cpu hsf of course plays a big role, although probably less important than the chip itself.

I have a TT Volcano7+ and it's not as good as my TT Dragon Orb3 which died. The best of them all is the Coolermaster Aero7/Aero7+.:argue:
