This has happened before, and usually I've just emptied the temperary internet files cache, and the problem went away, but not this time.

I've been saving astronomy photos (some of them very large, high res images, 20MB+), but now when I try to save the JPG's, IE will only let me save them as a bmp, unless I go back a page and right click>>Save Target As. But that only works if the link is directly to a JPG.

It only happens with JPG's. GIF's, Targa's, TIFF's and BMP's are fine.

I checked my temp internet files folder, and it's 1.4 GB, but the limit I have set is 3 GB.

Either one or both of the following MSKB articles may be of some help to you Über~PhLuBB...

Internet Explorer Saves Images As Bitmaps (.bmp Files) (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;810978)

Internet Explorer Does Not Save Graphics Files in the Proper Format (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q260650) ;)

Thanks!

For the benefit of anyone else reading this thread, it seems like the three causes are as follows:

1: Internet Cache is either full or close to full.

2: ActiveX or Java applet could have been downloaded improperly, or might not have proper certification.

3: You have "Save encrypted files to disk" disabled in IE, but are trying to save files from within a secure (HTTPS) site.

The solutions are, respectively:

1: Empty the internet cache. Tools>> Internet Options>> General Tab>> Delete Files Button.

2: Remove damaged or "Unknown" applets. Tools>> Internet Options>> General Tab>> Settings Button>> View Objects Button>> Right click on an object listed as "Unknown" or "Damaged" and remove it.

3: Either disable saving of encrypted files, or if you want to leave it on, right click on the image and Open In New Window. The new window should not be HTTPS, letting you save the file.
