View Full Version : How often do you upgrade?

I was just wondering how often all of you guys upgrade your rig to keep it up with the rest of the world. Do you buy new parts every month, or every couple years, or every few weeks? Also, I would like to know what is the most efficient; I don't have too much money to buy too many parts at one time. Is there some sort of system everyone follows to keep up with new technology?

It depends on when I need it.
I use gaming as a mark......when top-of-the-line games start to chug, then it's soon time to upgrade, hehe.
My current system is working great tho. It's not high quality, but it works. The motherboard is crap, and my GF3 is starting to show it's age (Splinter Cell). sux, cuz I paid $320 for it....lol.
Right now I'm pondering whether or not to get an Nforce2 board. I really should, because with college next year, it may be a long time before I upgrade. I want to get a hammer in my comp, but I won't be able to if they come out after class starts.....so I'm thinking that I should go for uber upgrade soon. NV35 (when it comes out, that is), corsair, and nForce2.
I have my eyes on the Chaintech Zenith, but with the problems it's having it may be a bit before I get it....they say they're fixing it, tho......I want a mobo that looks cool, comes with uber stuff, and above all is NOT asus. I dunno on the epox, cuz it's ugly, hehe.
hm, /me just realized that the brown/yellow/gold Chaintech might not look too good with the green and blue CCFLs in my case...

I upgrade when my apps absolutely, positively WILL NOT work, no matter the tweaking, without some newer technology, :)

When the price is right. Less than $80 for a huge increase. First thing for me would be memory. I'm going to wait a while, long while, for a new processor, one that won't bottleneck my 9700.
today, tomorrow, the next day, etc etc.

Wow you guys seem to upgrade a lot. I haven't upgraded anything for about two years  and now I just about have to get new everything but dvd player and floppy drive :) I don't think I'm gonna let that happen again, too much work putting it all together at once, and checking every little thing to make sure it works, but its all good when it will finally works (and you REALLY notice a difference with an upgrade, so its kind of fun).

Unfortunately i am very good at spending money, so whether its new ram, new heatsinks, or cases, and mobos i probably upgrade at least one thing a month.
Average life of a complete system (case, mobo, cpu, etc) is like maybe 2 years before all of the peices have been replaced.
What can i say, i need my 3dmark scores to keep rising and to be able to play everyting at 1260 X 1028

if you do a massive upgrade and then continually search the web for deals and stuff you can usually find a good priced product for cheap without having to wait until you NEED it and its not on sale.

When I feel like it, or I want to get more F@H work units out :)
But to have the latest, NOPE.

i upgrade when i have the $$$ to buy what i want.
and i dont buy the newest parts, unless its the same price and can be oced like mad."ie" xms ram - nf7
but i wont buy top of the line video card or cpu.it has to be cheap and fast tho.these 2 things are sold by hype and ive learned to not buy into it.
but i have a monthly pc budget to follow actually it what is left after i pay my bills.and it can be decent amount most times.
my bedroom is looking like frankenstiens lab :D

i think in this forum taht most upgrades tend to happen when he/she merely has the money. whether or not the purchase is top 'o the line or not a new doo-hicky is always cool

I personally don't worry about the rest of the world, I upgrade when I see fit too or have the extra money, but for some reason those two usally never agree...lol...

I upgrade as I see the need. Right now all I needed was a new graphics card... CHECK.

I upgrade when I feel it's time I should, I don't need to keep up with the latest and greatest, I just like keeping my machine at a point where I can be happy with how it performs.

Same here, but I tend to wait for holidays to come around and I really don't try very many new titles. I haven't upgrading anything since September and I don't really have a need/want to do so now that my machine is so quiet and stable.

I've upgraded a computer once, and that was just to add a CD-RW drive p_q
About every year or 6 months. But I get small things if they look neat or interesting to check out. So that adds up.
Ever since I got real serious about badminton before Christmas, every 2-3 years. As long as I have something that can play music and chat baby it's all good.

I upgrade whenever I have enough money and the part I like isnt to expensive. Currently I want a new video card, but I'm not sure which one.

but isn't it whenever you have the money? am i wierd for buying parts when i merely have the money? that's how often i upgrade
when ever I have money I can afford to spend on computer parts and not anything else...next purchases in line are ...120gig, more ram, better video card, dvd burner, and LCD 19' or 20 inch
so...I have to wait to I get some more money
