Need some help thinking this through

Hey overclockers,
Earlier today I noticed my system starting to run kinda rough.If you moved the mouse fast accross the screen the cursor would freeze for a quick second.Then the start button would hesitate along with programs,folders etc...Have had this problem two or three times with windows xp home so I knew just where to look and there it was.Clicked on event viewer,accessed through administrative tools,then clicked application and I get this error prompt"The Event Log File Is Corrupt"
The only solution that I've come up with is reinstalling the operating system.But I really dont feel like going through all that again.Meaning the updates and stuff.Does anyone have any thoughts on what else I might try?Thanx alot.

You are still running XP correct? Have you tried to install over your current installation? Basicaly a repair?

Check the running processes in Task manager and make sure that there isn't anything taking up 100% or near that much. Things like spyware, adware, and bloatware from Kazaa and P2P programs, as well as freeware programs like GoZilla and things like that. Run AdAware and remove anything that shows up (unless you have an ad-supported app, in which case you need to make sure you don't remove those adware programs, or the program won't function. There are guides that will tell you which not to delete, I'm sure). This is why I stay away from P2P apps and free-ware laden with spyware (like GoZilla).
