PIII 600EB and Asus P3V4X at 110 Celsius!!!

I've just reassembled my machine around a new Asus P3V4X mobo (bios 1005), a PIII 600EB and PC133 SDRAM. The cpu temp reading in the bios says 75 Celsius and climbs to over 110 Celsius when I turn the FSB up to 133 where it should be and then the mobo starts beeping. Is this just an insane temp reading and is there any way to fix it and/or find the real temp?

Are you OCing? If not, you might have your problem with your heatsink and fan. Try to reseat the heatsink and fan. 75C is beyond the safe temp which is 60C. Asus mobos seem to have higher temp. than others. I used to have an Abit mobo and it is 5-8C lower than my current Asus board.

I'm not overclocking at all yet, I'm just trying to get this machine up and running at it's intended speed before I do anything else. The heatsink and fan are just a cheapo version but still 110 degrees celsius would start a fire! I don't want to run the machine at those temps cuz it'd fry the processor pretty quick. Something must be up with the motherboard's temperature readings or the processor is a remarked forgery.

Make sure the heatsink is sitting squarely on the cpu die. Use a VERY thin layer of thermal compound. Too much and the temps will climb fast. Is the heatsink hot ot the touch? If it's cool and the cpu is smoking then it can't be making good thermal contact. Sometimes the lever on sockets can keep the heatsink from sitting flush.
