My Mom's system that she bought in '99 is getting pretty old:
Pentium 3 600 Mhz
256 MB PC100 SDRAM
19 GB ATA66 HDD
Geforce 4 MX 440

she asked me the other day to price a new computer for her. She'd like a computer capable of watching TV, and burning DVDs so I put together the following:

-Athlon XP 2100 T-bred B
-512 MB Corsair DDR333 RAM (1 DIMM)
-Asus A7N8X deluxe
-Western Digital 80 GB HDD w/ 8 MB cache
-Sapphire Radeon 9500 Pro
-ATI TV Wonder PCI TV tuner
-Cooler Master ATC-200
-Pioneer DVR-A05 4x/2x/16x/8x (DVD-R/DVD-RW/CD-R/CD-RW)
-Samsung floppy
-Sparkle 400W PSU
-Thermal Right SLK-900 heatsink w/ 92mm Panaflo H1A fan possibly
-for OS I'll use my copy of XP Pro...I've had it for 6 months and I beleive that I can legally install it on another machine now
-I'll use her current monitor, speakers, keyboard, mouse, etc. for right now too

Total: $1242

do you guys have any suggestions or comments? I went with the SLK-900 so I could use a 92mm fan and cut down on noise, also reviews that show it to be slower don't use 92mm fan as it's supposed to. Other than that I think it'll be fun to put together. Thanks in advance!

Does that MOBO have onboard sound. (Fairly silly question nowadays, but it never hurts to be thorough)

yes the motherboard does, i have that one and the onboard sound is actually very good.
that looks like a good system, certaintly an improvement over the old machine.

What are you going to do with the old one? Sell it? I'm always looking for my next Folding@Home (http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=108580) rig:D

i would recomend 2 sticks of memory instead of one.

is she going to be overclocking? :p

if not, i suggest that you go for some cheaper ram. you could probably save a few hundred and go for some samsung or something...unless you have money to burn, in which case - knock yourself out :p

other than that...looks good.

That is one hell of a shopping list. I was told I was bad, shhpt! Got any work for me? What small country do you own?
That is WAY too much for those parts. $1200 and no 51in monitor included in that price? That better be fully-no-questions-asked-insured, overnight super shipping or something.

J/K though. It seems a little high guy...

I am not familiar with that motherboard but I know firsthand that the corsair memory does not get along with nForce2 boards at all so if it is based on the nvidia nForce2 chipset pick up some nice kingston ram or something and save yourself the trouble

I dont think the slk900 fits the a7n8x very well, might want to check up on that before getting it.

Yeah, everything you have listed seems fine EXCEPT the heatsink. I recently built a similar system with the same exact motherboard and the SLK-900 DOES NOT FIT!!! Steer clear of buying it because even though the thermalright website says it will work after bending some capacitors, take it from me, IT WON'T. I'll link to the page just so you can see:www.thermalright.com/faq_900_Motherboard.html (http://www.thermalright.com/faq_900_Motherboard.html)
I am just letting you know so you don't make any mistakes in purchasing. The reason it doesn't fit is because of the orientation of the heatsink and the fact that it has a trapezoidal shape which causes it to be obstructed by capacitors and the northbridge heatsink on the motherboard.
I personally went with the SLK-800A which works just fine. If you aren't overclocking the CPU then almost any of thermalright's AMD coolers are enough.
